Thanks to all that voted and tried to help out one of our athletes from Los Fresnos. In our Area playoff game, QB Jeremy Springer had 8 TD's on the night (6 passing and 2 rushing) in a 55-28 thumping of the La Joya Coyotes. He was unstoppable.

QB Springer leads Falcons to third round

If there was a heavy lesson La Joya should have learned on Friday night, it was don’t get Jeremy Springer upset.

The Los Fresnos quarterback admitted his nerves took the best of him early on and his first throw in the Falcons’ first drive to Esia Rivera was off target.

A few plays later, running back Danny Mendez (8 rushes, 61 yards) got a seven-yard run, which led to some pushing and shoving with Springer right in the middle of it.

The playoff intensity of the 6-foot-4, 195-pound signal caller, a potential Division I prospect, transformed him from Clark Kent into Superman.

The senior field general spanked La Joya for 295 yards and a career-high six touchdown passes to lead Los Fresnos to a 55-28 Class 5A Division I area round win over the Coyotes at Leo Aguilar Stadium.

In addition to his remarkable numbers, you can also throw in that the left-hander went 17-of-23 passing to six different receivers along with 73 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns. Springer and the rest of the Falcons (12-0) fly into the regional round where they will face Austin Westlake (9-2) at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Victoria.

“I was a little nervous,” Springer admitted. “After that, (pushing and shoving) we just got into it. We weren’t here to lose this game.”

Then there was also Spinger’s supporting cast, Batman and Robin, in wide receivers Esia Rivera and Jorge Mata. Both receivers were sensational on the night as each scored and went over 100 yards. Mata (7 catches, 139 yards, 3 touchdowns) was having so much fun he felt like he was in the playground. Meanwhile, Rivera put his two cents in with 5 catches, 107 yards and two scores.

“It was great to show what we’ve got,” said Mata, who scored in 9, 10 and 15-yard receptions and also had a highlight film juggler catch late in the fourth quarter. “At first, I didn’t think I would get into the end zone.”

Both teams went toe-to-toe early on as each exchanged touchdowns to start the contest. The Coyotes (6-6) managed to move the ball on the Falcon defense early on. On La Joya’s second drive, with the Coyotes trailing 7-6, they opened their play-book by going hook-and-lateral.

Quarterback Javier Acevedo hit receiver Joshua Torres, who lateraled to running back Juan Martinez. The play resulted in a 72-yard reception to the Los Fresnos 8-yard line. It looked as if both of Torres’ knees were down on the play, but officials didn’t rule him down.

Facing a fourth and goal, the Falcons made up for La Joya’s big move by stopping Acevedo short of the goal line. Right away, Springer went to work and found Rivera for a 64-yard reception. That set up Springer’s first touchdown throw to Rivera to finish off the impressive 99-yard drive.

The Coyotes still made things interesting in the second quarter after Acevedo scored on a quarterback keeper from 32 yards and tied the game at 14 after Martinez’ two-point conversion. With 9:38 left in the first half, the Falcons pulled away as they scored three touchdowns on a Rivera catch, Springer run and Mata reception for a 35-14 halftime lead.

In the second half, Los Fresnos jumped out of the gates and scored on only four plays, culminated by Springers’ 15-yard touch-down pass to Mata for a 42-14 lead. By then, the Falcons had the Coyotes on their heels although La Joya did manage to get a couple of more scores before it was all said and done. The Coyotes got a fine performance from Martinez, who had 24 carries for 225 yards and one touchdown. His final carry will be remembered as one-yard shy of the end zone as the Falcons iced the win with another goal-line-stand.

As for the offense, Los Fresnos coach Scott Ford was amazed with how much his offense just keeps getting better and better.

“It’s something we hadn’t done in the past,” Ford said. “I think we played our best football tonight.”

Does anyone have any info on Austin Westlake?
