Had a paper accepted for a conference in Spain at the end of September and now have to give a presentation on it. The conference is at a town called Santiago which in the north West of Spain just above the top of Portugal. The conference goes for 4 days and will probably spend about another week to 10 days in Europe. Have been to the UK and Ireland before and may well visit London for a few days as my sister is there or maybe Greece if she has moved there by then for a new job. Ideas on things to do in the region, how to get around, and places of interest what be greatly appreciated. really have no idea at the moment, maybe Paris but really not sure after that. Smeg PS if the Rox had games i would get a round the world ticket and visit again, but they don't.
Congrats!!! You need to swing over this way for a driveway rematch! So, will it take you as long to cook ribs as it took me to send you the recipe?
maybee, not out of the question, but unlikely. check your email on the ribs, need some more advice. btw saw the Spider pictures on the weekend, Mrs Smeg forgot to show me.
Santiago de Compostela is really awesome, or so my sister told me last year when she was there. I've been to Northern Spain but the eastern part, not to Santiago in the west. Here's an article from last Sunday's NY Times travel section about Northern Spain, a good read: http://query.nytimes.com/search/article-printpage.html?res=9F00E0D8133BF93AA15755C0A9659C8B63 If you get a chance, the town of San Sebastian, in the NE near france, is hard to beat. It is one of the most beautiful towns in all of W. Europe. It's right on the atlantic at the foot of the Pyrenees, just a wonderful place to visit. As for getting around, they have a really excellent bus system that is more reliable and frequent and cheaper than trains (which require trips to madrid, usually) Or else you can rent a car. I rented one last time I was in southern spain and found it to be a breeze. That is going to be great. Enjoy.
Thanks Sam so if i wanted to go to france from spain, a car would be best? and is a car near/in paris very advisable??
1) Probably not from Santiago de Compostela...pretty far (about 1640 km to Paris). 2) Only if you stay outside of the center and have strong enough nerves to put up with the Parisian style of driving (and parking). Try getting around the Arc de Triomphe and you know what I'm talking about...They have a very good metro system in Paris, so I think you would not really need a car.
If you don't want to go to Madrid and fly, Take a train. You can take a bus or train to one of the border towns (I thnk Irun is the name of the place where you change trains) and then you switch to the TGV, high speed train, to Paris. That will take about, maybe 6-8 hours or so, I forget. But be careful as the french transit unions have been striking a lot recently.
Iberia and Air Europa offer nonstop flights from Santiago de Compostela to Paris starting at about $ 200 roundtrip (I think you will have to be lucky with your dates and availability in that particular "cheap" booking class, though, to get that price). Sometimes one can find specials by going to the airline's website directly. Check this link (Travelocity): http://makeashorterlink.com/?O20512C25 P.S.: By the way, I am in Spain right now (Barcelona), in an Internet café, it's about 4 a.m., so I'll be out of here in a little bit, probably won't check in again before Tuesday.
might get a round the world trip, that way i can arrive in london, then Santiago and then onto Paris and maybe other euro destinations, and then return home via the US where are you normally SJC??
I really have no advice for you. However, if you want to wait a week, Lynus would be a good person to ask. He's been around the world and back again several times. In fact, he's in England and GB today through Sunday. I don't know if he has internet access so he might not see this thread. But if you need advice, ask him when he gets back. I'm sure he'll have some good tips!
Franco's Tomb is the coolest sight in Europe. I have lived in Europe for seven years and been all over but I always remember his tomb in the Mountain more than anything else.... except maybe the fun I had in Amsterdam and Ibiza.
