Thought I'd add a fourth June 15 through 20 I'm in Hotlanta for the National Forensic League National Tournament. Any good suggestions on stuff to do?
Well, perhaps if I weren't taking students this might be a place to check out . . . perhaps they have guided tours: "And here's where Dikembe Mutombo . . . here's where Patrick Ewing . . . . "
Don't expect street signs. Whoever put up Atlanta's street signs did so as to trick and befuddle incoming tourists. Expect them to lead you astray, to tease you at the last minute - expect your students to learn new and interesting curse words as you blow by the street you were supposed to turn on.
There are nice clubs and bars in Buckhead. Nice bars in Virginia Highlands. Maggies is a good bar, it is near Lavista. Park Bench is a decent bar practically on Emory campus. Turner Field...
Go eat at Mary Mac's Tea Room, near the Fox Theatre and Georgia Tech campus. Best fried green tomatoes I've ever had. And for good barbecue and blues music, visit Fat Matt's on Piedmont.
Club Cheetah isn't bad, but don't expect any contact on your lap dances. Can't compare to our Texas establishments.
man, don't come here. just a bunch of country braves fans. all of 'em suck. anyway, here's what to do: 1. the colonade restraunt on cheshire brigde road- best shrimp in atlanta and sweet potato souffle. 2. collard green cafe in toco hills- best greens, smothered chicken, and cobbler in atlanta. 3. phipps plaza and lenox mall- good shopping. kinda expensive though. 4. radial on dekalb avenue- best lunch and brunch in atlanta. really weird menu that changes everyday. sorry for not giving you any suggestions on nightlife. i really haven't made any friends since moving here a couple of years ago. no one likes me.
Actually, you are off on its location. It is in midtown on Ponce de Leon just east of Piedmont. Their food, though is a little inconsistent. Best FGT I have had there was at the Flying Biscuit...although it was close with Mary Mac's. Oh, and Atlanta sucks, for the most part. If you are from Houston, expect to be disappointed with most of the food you eat. Go to Buckhead if you want to be around a bunch of obnoxious and pretentious white people.
Thanks folks. What about stuff to see around the town? Remember that I've got two 15 year old students with me, so there is no night life as far as I'm concerned
hmmm... what else can you do? hmmmm... -going to a braves game is always fun. i always wear my astros attire when i go to make up for being there in the first place. nothing like sitting outside and having a beer. -someone above mentioned the fox theatre. it's a pretty cool place. i went to see phantom of the opera and west side story there. i really hate musicals, but i went anyway because i had nothing else better to do. again, i don't have any friends. pretty pathetic. you could probably find out more about the place at... access atlanta -centenial park is a nice place to sit out and enjoy the day and people watch. whatever you do, don't buy any of the oils or colognes from the people on the marta trains or buses... no matter how cheap they are. i got a horrible rash that resembled ebola after using the stuff a few months ago.
You drivin through? <---Only one state over. But I'll prolly be out of town. Welllllllllll, Atlanta is certainly a lot better than where I am now (DC). It's terribly boring here; nothing to do except gov't tourist traps. Baltimore is a little better (btw, Camden Yards was nice. Like a early MMP. Not as good as I had hoped. Oh well). Uhhhh, enjoy it. Oh, two great places to eat are: The Pacific Rim and Maggioni's Little Italy (sp). A little expensive though. I think my uncle leases the land to Cheesecake Factory and ESPNZONE. I wouldn't recommend either; A.) CF is number one in the country for volume of people and B.) There's one in Houston Good luck though.
How about the museums? A Braves game sounds awesome. I know I'll show what a geek I am saying this, but I *LOVE* museums. I could spend a day in every museum I've ever been to. Are there any that don't suck? I'll have a car, I think . . .
Vengeance: What types of Museums do you like? While I love scientific or war museums, I hate art museums, and I loathe contemporary art museums. (And I can say this whole-heartedly. I had some friends take me to The Louvre a while ago, and I coudn't stand it. However, the British Science Museum was great, and the British Imperial War Museum was a must see, IMO.)
