I'm trying to throw together a two day trip to Pittsburgh. As it's last minute, I'm looking for a deal on a hotel, and ideas on things to do/ places to eat. Any ideas come with rep. Also, how bad is traffic? Honest assessment. I've hard its a hard place to get around, but I don't know if I trust that assessment.
Should have gone before the baseball season was over. PNC Park is fantastic. Spoiler Gotta get a Primantis Bros sandwich. Some people don't really like them, but they are a Pittsburgh Institution. Take the incline for great views of the city. Andy Warhol Museum is supposed to be pretty cool.

Been to Primantis, as I live fairly close. I hit up one on the outskirts, but I've never been into town. I'd love to do the incline. Always wanted to do that. I wanna take my wife to Southside Works, also. Any particular area of town better? I' be driving in from the north side, but it seems to me the South side is talked about more.
Pittsburgh has a bad reputation for being a dirty steel town, but it's actually a beautiful place. Great restaurants: Monterrey Bay (best view), Franco's, Hyeholde. Primanti Brothers is a great local casual sandwich place too. There are some inexpensive hotel south of PIT near the big casino (Meadows). Ok, now load me up with rep.
You are a little out of range, but if you make the drive to Hershey,PA. that is where the original Hersheys Chocolate is made. go check out carnegie science center Andy Warhol museum Go eat at The Carlton Go eat at Eleven.
Pittsburgh actually has a really great and well respected symphony if you have any interest in that kind of thing.
Whoa random I was about to start a thread myself I'll be heading to pittsburgh later today and will be there till Monday evening was going to look for ideas for things to do. I've heard about Primanti Bros sandwiches already but good to hear about the incline train and all I am going to try to also snag tickets for the steelers game on sunday
I've lived in Pittsburgh twice while directing plays there. I don't recall the traffic being that much worse than any other major city except at rush hour when it can be standstill. It is indeed difficult to get around. If you miss an exit on a freeway you cannot typically U-Turn and get back on going the other way. Many were the times I wound up on a third or fourth highway before I could try to retrace my steps and get where I was trying to go. Or done exactly as I was instructed by a map only to land at the top of a mountain on the other side of a river from where I was trying to get to. And the people that live there give shoddy directions because most of them are lifers and know the city intuitively. I understand; I do the same thing with Houston directions. (When I lived in Providence the joke was "turn left where the Dunkin Donuts used to be.") A couple of unique things to know about Pittsburgh: - There is such a thing as a "Pittsburgh left." This is a thing that only exists in Pgh as far as I know, but if you are in the front of the line at a traffic light and are turning left, the oncoming traffic will wait for you to make your turn even though you do not have the right of way. In Pittsburgh, they consider the first left turner to have the right of way. (Not the second.) - Because Pennsylvania is a Commonwealth they have an unusual system of governance which has created drinking laws that are strange to us in the rest of the nation. If you wish to buy beer, you will have to go to a special store for it. (I can't remember what they're called - they have a name.) And you won't be able to buy less than a case at once. They only sell by the case. On the other hand, every single bar will sell you beer to go, all the way up to closing time, as much as you want, by the six-pack, and not even marked up as high as the beer you drink in the bar. I used to be a very heavy drinker and I remember on my first night there I was in a bar and it was closing time and I was like, "I need beer to drink at home now and I couldn't buy it at the gas station, what the hell?" And, though it was past two in the morning, someone said, "Why not just buy it to go here?" And I was like, "You can DO that?!" Which totally made up for how inconvenient it was to buy beer anywhere other than bars. - Pittsburgh is a beautiful city. Truly beautiful. And the people there are so nice, the salt of the earth. Most every bar is also a restaurant and most bars cater to people of all ages. I've seen kids and grandparents having dinner at a punk bar. - The art scene is very cool there. There is always something wonderful to see or do if you are interested in the arts at all. - Don't forget to wear a Steelers hat and jersey everywhere. Everyone in Pittsburgh does this. I'm afraid I can't make recommendations about restaurants or bars because I'm vegan and I like dive bars, cheap beer, and a well-worn pool table. My tastes are peculiar in these areas and probably not helpful to you. I will say though that my vegan girlfriend and I, who lived together in Pittsburgh for the better part of a year, talk all the time about how much we miss The Quiet Storm: a delicious vegan restaurant and hang-out, BYOB, where bands play at night. We're very psyched about spending a couple of days there around the holidays since we're seeing her parents in Ohio over Christmas -- we have good friends there but we are almost as excited about what we'll eat at Quiet Storm. If you like going to Bourbon Street in NOLA or 6th Street in Austin or Washington Ave in Houston -- in other words if you like drinking with frat boys with popped collars and girls with more makeup than Cher, The South Side is your place. If not, avoid it. Pittsburgh is a city filled with fascinating neighborhoods and something fun to do no matter what your pleasure. I wish you and The Yo_Yo a wonderful visit.
Primanti's and the Casino have already been mentioned The Warhol is good Learn to say the word "Yinz" Like Batman said(lol), the roads can be tricky if you miss an exit The incline is also great. Other than that, except you have Steelers tix, (since the Pirates are done for and the Pens are on lockout hiatus) then I can't think of much else to do. Oh also, fyi, taxi's suck over there. One major cab company. Barely any competition so if you need a cab hopefully they show up on time. I've had to wait for hours for a cab outside one of the hotels downtown earlier this year. Wasn't a pleasant experience wondering where all the cabs where. (Maybe they thought I was Danny Glover??) Have fun in PGH OP and Yoyo
