My girlfriend is looking for a job as a nurse in pediatric med-surg (medical surgical)

After 4 years of nursing school, she is about to graduate later this month and is looking for a job now. If anyone can help with any leads or job offers, please reply or email me at clutch.citizen@gmail.com

She lives in the Sugar Land area, but if there are any offers in the general houston area, please let me know.

Thanks you. Your help is much appreciated.

    good luck in houston.

i just graduated on friday and i wasn't able to find a job in houston. i started looking in february.

all the internship processes are done with for the summer in houston..

next ones are probably early fall.

austin/dallas/sa hospitals have a lot more opportunities for new grads than houston but even those...it's too late to apply.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. She's got some applications in already. Nurses are in demand, but the hard part is that a lot hospitals are not accepting graduate nurses (St. Luke's especially).

If anyone knows anyone that can help her get her foot in the door, please help. She's got clinical experience through her classes, but she does not have "official" work experience. Nursing school demands a lot of time, and she didn't work when she went to school.

Ain't that the truth. I'm finishing my first year of nursing school at OU and it's just been an absolute killer. I'm working up here this summer because MD Anderson is in a hiring freeze and the VA didn't happen (too many applicants for too few open spots) and I had no luck with any other similar program in the Houston area, with a 3.5 GPA and good letters of recommendation to boot. Not a good sign....but one of the graduating seniors got hired at St. Luke's and starts in a month or so, but her aunt works there as well, so that had something to do with it.

Best of luck to your girl. It'll happen, so tell her to keep her chin up. There is way too great a need for RNs for it not to happen.

Yeah, I didn't think it would be like this but apparently a lot of hospitals are holding back. Either that or they'll hire only experienced nurses.
My wife wanted to work at Willowbrook Methodist when she graduated but they didn't accept graduating nurses. She ended up getting offers from Tomball Hospital and St. Catherine's near Katy. She's been working there for 2.5 years now.
Try to apply there because (at leats 2.5 years ago) at least they accept graduates.

My girlfriend graduates on Saturday. She has been looking for quite a while, and also is not having a ton of luck. We do not live in Houston, though. She has a good chance at one place, and is supposed to hear back from them today or tomorrow (that is regarding whether or not she goes to the second phase of the interviews process).

    Good luck all.

I have a question...didn't want to start another thread on it.....

My girlfriend is interviewing currently with probably the largest hospital in my area. It is an absolutely great opportunity for her. They want to start her out in the ICU, since she has aspirations to go on for a higher degree that could require at least a year of critical care. So far, the hospital has been great to her. Problem is, she just went through her THIRD interview today, and tomorrow they want her back to shadow someone in the ICU tomorrow for 4 hours. They're doing this because her ICU experience from school was at smaller hospitals and was probably nothing like the ICU here.

She is interviewing amongst four other people who are also vying for the job. She has a great resume, great recommendations, had a 3.8 GPA, was in honor society, etc. etc. I think the other 4 nurses are experienced, though. The head nurse of the entire hospital told her straight up that they really like her and would like to hire her...

My question is for people with experience with this kind of stuff (as I'm young also, and don't have much job interviewing experience....I didn't really even have to interview for my job I have now...), what are the chances you think they pick someone straight out of school over these experienced nurses?

P.S. to Clutch Citizen, and all others looking, any of you or your loved ones have luck finding jobs?

My mom (a nurse) was saying even hospitals and nursing hiring are getting hit by the economy. This usually isn't the case during economic downturns, or at least not to this extent.

I think out of school with her talent would be more attractive because she will obviously take less money than a more experienced nurse. Also, if she did so well in school, why doesn't she take a practice MCAT (e-mcat.com, offered by AAMC) to see if medical school could be a possibility.

I think it depends on the situation, but generally, experience has higher priority. Good grades and academic achievement won't cut it alone anymore. You need volunteer work and other relevant activities to compliment your academic resume.

My, now, Fiancee has not received a call back yet. The nurse hiring freeze is not as bad as a month ago, but it's still pretty bad. Just about every listing has "NO GRADUATE NURSES FOR THIS POSITION - ONLY EXPERIENCED." We've got a few contacts that might be able to help, but even they didn't seem to opticmistic.

Dr. of Dunk is right. The economy is pretty bad when the nursing demand is still there, but no one is hiring.

I would say experience is more important. They don't give nurses that big a raise so the experienced nurses likely don't get paid that much more than your girlfriend.

More of a reason she should try her hand at medicine.

She is absolutely brilliant. I consider myself to be pretty smart, as in, I think with enough studying and hard work, I could get myself into medical school. But she's on a different level than me. In high school, she took a class with a teacher from Italy (some sort of medical class), who was a physical therapist/athletic trainer. The teacher told her every day over and over that she was going to be a doctor. She would just laugh at him and tell him that she didn't want to sink that much time and money into schooling, and he would say, "No. You're going to be a doctor..." lol.

Anyways, as I said, she has told me before that she doesn't want to spend that many years in school (i.e. be in school through her late 20's, early 30's), and be that in debt when she graduates. We had talked before about setting ourselves up for medical school and we could both try and go together, but we agreed that it's too much of our lives.

That being said, she wants to be a nurse anesthetist. It's funny because that's still a lot of schooling, but at least it can be done, for the most part, while you're working. The hospital that she is interviewing at has a nurse anesthetist program located in it. That's a rarity, I think.

I'm not totally happy with where I'm at right now. I'm an x-ray tech. I graduated number one in my class. Problem is, I'm like 3 credits shy of even an associate degree. I have a certificate, but I slacked off while I was at college (not actual x-ray school). I think my GPA was like a 3.25 or something. Lol. I'm pretty ashamed of that. In the near future I'm going to go back to school and further myself, I just have to figure out which one of the two tracks I will choose....

How's your schooling going, by the way?

The easiest way to find a job is networking with other graduating students. Whoever gets in first can let the others know where to apply.

I'd say the experienced nurses will get most of the jobs, but there are quite a few that are bad interviewers as my nurse manager has told me...it's quite surprising how many people she interviews that have a lot of attitude, or simply sound like they have no idea what they are talking about even though they are suppose to have all kinds of experience (scary).

Still, I believe there is a quota imposed on hospitals that require them to hire X-amount of nursing graduates per year to help with the overall shortage. It seems she would have a good chance with her credentials...employers look for those that are ready to work hard and be assertive in trying to learn all the info that is going to be thrown at them the first year or so.

Heck, I'd been in the healthcare field for 7 years as an xray tech (thought I had a good base of healthcare knowledge) and switched to nursing to be a CRNA b/c I thought I wanted to do that (although that's changed significantly). But it took me a good 1.5 years to get pretty comfortable in nursing...so many different factors you have to monitor with different morbidities, and co-morbidities, etc...

CRNA is a great field to go into Eddie...there are a lot of folks that are going into it from our unit (CCU at St. Lukes)...most everyone has good grades, but it's the GRE that a lot of folks have trouble with...but if she puts in the time it's not that tough to pass.

Lots of folks making 120k-170k straight out of CRNA school depending on what you want to do. Not too shabby.

    Thanks for the info!

I like my job as an x-ray tech a lot. It's very interesting, and I take good pictures. I just am greedy and want to make more money. Have you heard of the new thing called the Radiologists' assistant? Kind of like an offshoot of a PA- centered radiology. This is what I would like to do....if it catches on. Not sure if it will or not.

Otherwise, I have an interest in Radiation Therapy, and could get a degree in radiation therapy in a year....or become a dosimetrist in about 3 years (which is probably what I would aim to do if I went the RT way).
