I am in the market for a budget notebook computer for school(which means no Macbook). Power/performance is not a huge concern for me but that, along with portability counts too. Battery life would be nice but I'll be using a power cord most of the time so it's not a total deal breaker.

Buying a netbook is an option but even with my low performance needs the stats on most netbooks are quite disturbing, especially since this notebook should last me 4 years.

I hear that there are some good deals right before the college semester starts, is that true?

What are the best notebook manufacturers out there?

I just got a sweet 14.1" Lenovo Ideapad Y450 for like $650 shipped. It's got 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo 6400, 4GB RAM, 250MB HD and is pretty thin. You can try using the Lenovo college discount to get that price.

Check out the following sites :

    GotApex.com
    TechBargains.com
    BensBargains.net

Check the hot deals forums on Fatwallet.com and AnandTech.com as well. I have no idea what you're using it for, so I don't know what to tell you to buy, especially if you're looking for it to be viable for 4 years. If you're looking for gaming, development, or other CPU-intensive stuff, you should expect to pay no less than $600-$700. If you just want to check email, write Word documents, etc., you can get something in the $450-$600 range probably. I, personally, wouldn't get a netbook unless all you're using the thing for is checking emails, maybe editing some documents, and surfing the 'Net.

I'm looking for one too! After 2 weeks of research, I have narrowed it down to three:

    Apple MacBook Air
    Acer Timeline
    HP Tablet PC

    Good luck with your decision!

if u are gonna have a notebook for 4 years..reliability is a must

    proven brands:

    IBM/lenovo
    sony
    apple

other features to consider: battery life, size/weight, screen size, OS

if you are unfamiliar with laptops in general go to a local best buy to see the different screen sizes..11"-17" ..personally i think 12.1-15 is where most ppl would advise for every day use..

ive had a dell notebook for 4 years..and ive had my current sony notebook for 3 years now. i will probably upgrade in another year or 2.

and of course do your research on how much is too much to pay for the notebook u want.

I'm definitely willing to sacrifice screen size for portability. I don't need a giant screen for anything. I'm in business so I doubt I will be doing anything other than editing documents and using MS Office.

Take my word for it go with the Macbook Air. I got one last year for work and at first I thought no optical drive and limited peripheral connections could be a problem but the tradeoff in portability and lightweight is far more beneficial than I expected. I take it almost everywhere I go and it never feels like a burden, its like a cellphone you keep it with you no matter where you go. I've had budget, mid-size and high end laptops before but I would always think about should I take it with me or not wherever I go? That is no longer an issue. I think perfomance and speed is overstated when it comes to a laptop especially if you have a desktop almost everwhere yo go at the house or the office.

    Asus G50vt-X5

Best laptop for the money (gaming specs) right now. It's a year old and it's successors just came out in Best Buy last week so it will be even more discounted now.

$850 online in the clearance section, but look around stores and you can buy for ~$700 like I did; comes with a free TV tuner. Intel P7450, nVidia 9800m GS, 320 GB @ 7200 rpm, 15.6" screen, 4GB RAM.

What do you think of the new Acer Timeline? Less than 1 inch thin, 8 hours battery life and a fraction of the Air.

I <3 my macbook pro. But apple does charge extra for the name... which blows. But holy crap I freaking love this computer. Its sooo nice. The new mousepad is one of the best parts about it imo.
