    Find a recipe and sub the ketchup with mayonnaise. Thank me later.

    Thanks for the suggestions here...

    @ISOBall - "I didn't have success" as in... when I've subsituted tomato sauce for ketchup it didn't taste good.

    @Roscoe Arbuckle - Thanks for the recipe! And a sligh correction to one of your posts: I'm looking for a recipe that doesn't include ketchup, but it's ok if it includes tomato sauce.

    @heypartner - Thanks for the tips. Normally, when I smoke a brisket, I don't mop and I don't make a bbq sauce. My brisket stands on its own. I'm looking for a simple day-to-day bbq sauce for an oven-baked bbq chicken or grilled bbq chicken... more of a quick-and-easy dinner solution.

    @Buck Turgidson - Thanks for the recipe. I'll give it a shot.

    @Os Trigonum - Thanks for the first recipe you posted. I'm looking for more of a Texas flavor, not North Carolina.

    @CCorn - LOL. Nope.

    Heinz has a HFCS free ketchup (Simply Heinz) that uses real sugar. Tastes great. You could use that version as most BBQ sauces require ketchup.

    Forgot to mention oil in the sop/mop, I just use canola. I'll usually throw a halved lemon in there too, couple of bay leaves, whatever. Baste your pork/chicken with that every 30 mins or so, add more stuff if needed, use the leftovers as the base for your sauce. I pretty much measure it all by eye so I can't really help you with amounts.

    I made a mustard-based bbq sauce once not so long ago to mimic one I've had in South Carolina. I don't recall putting any ketchup in it. Obviously, it was heavy on the mustard and vinegar. I seem to recall the recipe went a little too heavy on the vinegar for my tastes (I would have gone less). But, it was still pretty good for my pork BBQ sandwiches.

    But, I can't say I've ever heard of a dark bbq sauce without ketchup in it.

    Truth be told...I prefer mustard-based bbq sauce over the dark regular bbq sauce. But, I know my Tom Thumb has zero mustard-based bbq sauce options...which pisses me off because there is way too much bbq sauce on store shelves that are similar bs. As a result, I usually have to order my sauce online or make it myself.

    This recipe is one of the few alternatives. Mustard is basically the only legitimate alternative to ketchup and/or tomato sauce.

    With that said, there are plenty of ketchup based recipes that taste nothing like, nor have the texture of ketchup. My family's recipe being one of them.

    My current favorite from a local joint is the sauce at The Pit Room on Richmond. It has a nice heat to it.
