I'm looking for one since the one I currently own cannot get any worse, it sucks ass. My current one is this

got it @ fry's for 15 bucks, didn't know it needed a card so I spent another 15 bucks on a 512MB card. I thought I didn't need an MP3 player but wanted to give it a try so I sought out the cheapest one I could find, now I am getting tired of it because...it sucks ass, basically. 10 hrs of battery life which is dismal, it is slow as hell when trying to import music, has ZERO support, didn't even come with a manual. It didn't show the song title or any text whatsoever, it showed numbers. I finally had enough with it when one side of my headphones lacked sound if it WASN'T put face down, WTF.

What I NEED from the player is
    • Shuffle option
    • Displays song title instead of numbers
    • 512MB or more of space(1GB is probably preferred)
    • Needs to be durable, shouldn't break easily
    • Rechargeable battery via USB or a separate cord

Is this too much to ask? I'm not asking for some iPod that plays videos or games. I'm not asking for something to read books on. Can a man just get something that works?

    1gb iPod Nano
    1gb Sandisk Sansa
1gb Creative Zen Micro (or something like that)

If mostly what you care about is cost, just keep an eye on each Friday's Fry's ad, and get whatever is cheap there. They've always got something for $20 or so. Here's a link to the Fry's ad, with several options that fit your critera. I'd also suggest checking out Target's clearance section. About a month and a half ago, I saw a Mobiblue DAH-1500i (2GB version) for ~$60, which is a great deal. In fact, I'd recommend the Mobiblue cubes for what you want -- they don't have awesome battery life, but they tend to work well, and be well-priced.

just a question, but whats the big deal with the battery life needing to be more than 10 hours? i know it's not very much compared to other players but really when are you going that long on a daily basis without having access to electricity to plug it back in?

Don't get a Sony -- man they are utter crap -- well the player is alright, but all the software necessary to change the music from mp3 to Atrac format takes forever. On top of that there is something sneaky they put on the disk that won't allow you to play certain music on the player. I think if you don't buy their licensed music from their site your SOL.

Btw - I've heard that IRiver is very good with excellent sound. Anyone heard similar things?
