Reflecting back, the Rockets have only given up one real draft pick to OKC (2024 12th pick- 1st round) of Nikola Topic who hasn't played a game yet due to injury. Before that the Rockets were able to keep all of their picks away from OKC by way of top protected. So far the Chris Paul for Westbrook trade doesn't look so bad.

In 2025, the Thunder do own the right to swap Houston for their 1st rounder (but the Rockets will end up with the better of the deal as they can turn around and swap that for the Suns pick).

Only question mark is the 2026 draft where Houston doesn't own any picks in the 1st round, which is still another year away where anything could happen. The pick could be bottom of the 1st anyhow or they could even pick one up from another team in a trade.

The Rockets on the other hand have benefited from their big trades to the Nets and LAC.

From Brooklyn in the Harden trade, the Rockets snagged Reed and Tari.

From the Clippers in the Gordon trade, the Rockets snagged Cam.

I prefer the trade that brought Sengun in exchange for nothing.

July 29, 2021: Drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 1st round (16th pick) of the 2021 NBA Draft.

July 30, 2021: Traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Houston Rockets for a 2022 1st round draft pick and a 2023 1st round draft pick. 2022 conditional 1st-rd pick was DET own, did not convey 2023 conditional 1st-rd pick was WAS own, did not convey

being also the Thunder, we can put both trades together. We traded Sengun and Westbrook for Chris Paul, Topic, and a future 1st, likely in the 20s

Anytime you see a Thunder fan hating on Sengun it's projection. That has GOT to sting.

Is 2026 the end of our obligations owed to OKC?

We have to thank Morey for adding protections on those picks and Stone for mitigating the risk by trading for other swaps and then being such a good drafter he got 6 prospects in 3 yrs. We are also pretty lucky cuz we got the 2nd pick in JG instead of giving it to OKC.

If could have been much worse if we didn't have luck on our side at the lotteries.

Morey really looked out for us with that trade. He didn’t want to do it but he did all he could to limit the destruction of the trade
