No one really jumps out as someone they really should have selected. I was really hoping they would have drafted Wayne Simien but he has been bolted to the Heat bench. Folks can stretch it a bit and say Ryan Gomes or David Lee, but they really weren't realistic possibiliies (folks would have said it was a reach). I reckon the one player I really wanted was drafted the position before them, Francisco Garcia. He is exactly the type of player they are looking for right now (tall perimeter shooter that defends).
Ryan Gomes (2nd rd #50, 6'7, 250) started the last 33 games of the season and averaged 12.4 ppg and 7.6 rpg on .515 shooting. Not necessary a better pick than Luther since he looks like an undersized PF with no 3 range rather than a wing with good size. But he certainly played well in the 2nd half of the season.
Overall Luther is a really good pick. We probably would have picked Sean May if he somehow fell to #24. But he may not turn out to be as valueble to the Rockets as Luther. If the rockets did as well in 01 and 02 as last in last year, things could have been so much better. We traded Richard Jefferson and Jason Collins for Eddie Griffin in 01 and picked Nachbar instead of T Prince in 02.
The only players that really stuck out after Luther was Gomes and Stoudamire. But after being pretty disappointed after the pick, Luther really was one of the highlights of the season.
Monta Ellis looks like an incredible player! For the Rockets last year though, I'd have to say Gomes or Kendrick Perkins from Boston.
Looks pretty good. Nice finisher (at least on the video). Hard to believe after the type of season the Rockets had, there were no highlights of him against us. I don't remember him when we played Golden State.
