after espn made a big deal about randy johnson's 4400 strikeouts yesterday i got to thinking. I remember (call me an oldtimer) when nolan was approaching walter johnson's record about 20 yrs ago. i believe that record stood for more than 50 yrs and i thought maybe only ryan and carlton would pass it... but since then there have been total of 8 people who passed his old record

what other sports records that stood awhile (at least 20yrs or so) have been passed by a lot of people...

    i'll start the list:

    1. obviously single season HR's (3 players - bonds, mcguire, sosa - a total of 6 times) passed 61...

    2. alltime football rushing - 7 people passed Jim brown's 12312 after it stood for about 20yrs...

    Touchdowns is a single season

Alexander set the mark this year

Holmes set it a couple years before that

    Faulk set it in 2000

    E. Smith set it in 1995

I believe Riggins held it before him in 1983

Ichiro breaking the single season hits record that had stood for 84 years

You're asking for some hard to find stats unless you get real technical.

yeah i know... that's why i'm amazed at the number of players who passed walter johnson considering the record stood for so long... i guess it's an indication of more batters using the all or none approach over the last 20 years.

Don Huston's 98 touchdown pass receptions record set in the 1940's stood for a long time until Steve Largent broke it with 100 in the 80's. Jerry Rice then zoomed past Largent with an incredible 198, Marvin Harrison 110, Tim Brown has 100,
