I'm due to go on vacation a week from today. The wife and I are taking a trip to the Dominican Republic as a delayed honeymoon/first year anniversary celebration (I've mentioned it on here before, I know). We'll be gone for a week - from early Friday morning to early Saturday morning the next week. Because of the cost of international minutes, I'm turning my phone off at the airport before we leave the country. The resort has the internet, but I don't plan on using it at all. This will be the first time I've gone more than a couple days without my phone, and I'm very much looking forward to it.

What's the longest you've gone without your phone and/or the internet?

Two years ago for 5 days while on an Alaskan cruise. The only downside to it was the day the cruise was to start there was a bus that picked up passengers from Anchorage and drove us a few hours to Whittier, AK. I was keeping up with the UH Cougars vs #5 Oklahoma State on my cell but lost cell signal for good early in the fourth quarter. I did see the final score once on the ship...a good start to the trip. Only wish I didn't catch the score the next day when the Texans laid an egg vs the Jets.

About 7 minutes this morning when Uverse cut off my internet a day early (moving) and my phone wasn't charged. Had to plug it in, turn on tethering, and get connected again. It was scary... I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I lived in Ukraine for 3 months last year and the first 30 days I had no phone and no internet. It was liberating. I felt awful an anxious without it the first few days and then after that it was an amazing feeling and I started going for walks, reading books, and enjoying real life again. Then I got back on the internet/phone of course, now it would be hard again to leave it. Really sad, actually.

I honestly can't remember the last time I went more than a few hours without either.

Backpacking in the mountains. While I'll have my cell with me, I don't turn it on, it's there just for emergency... not that I'd be able to get reception the majority of the time.

So, maybe a week max. It's an odd feeling, but I enjoy it.

I haven't owned a cell phone since 2006. At first, I had to lend my phone to my now-wife for a week... and I liked being 'away from it' so much that I told her to keep it. It's liberating.

I still dream of going away to a remote island somewhere and just livin the dream man. Well the closest i can get to that, is finding a ****ty lil aprtment on the beach in hawaii or mexico and having a **** job and i would spend my days chasing tourist vajayjay, hiking, mountain biking, hand gliding, etc.

Why can't a vacation be permanent. I don't need a house and a wife and children. With a little dog ****ting everywhere. Houston lifestyle is killing me. Don't need cable tv, smartphones, etc. Just want a healthy lifestyle where every day out doors is an adventure.

Just the way Steve Jobs would have wanted it.

A few days on each. 5-10 days maybe.

Outside of anything work related, I'm sure we can go days at a time without the internet if we really wanted to. As for cells, I don't think any sane gf would allow that.

A few years ago, I was out of the country without phone or internet for 2 weeks and LOVED it. Left my phone at home on purpose. The only problem was that it was in the midst of the Rockets 22-game winning streak and it was KILLING me trying to find out if it was still intact or not.

You can do this. Work your ass off for the next 10 years, live frugally, save up about 150k and then just move. People do this all the time. If that's really your dream then put a plan together, and do it.

    150k?

lol, i'm not gonna have a freakin Entourage type lifestyle.

I can probably move to Waikiki with 5-10k and then find a job doing labor and find a place on craigslist with people looking for roomates till i was settled in and could find a place of my own. Then maybe later, find a less populated area on one of the other islands.

i was saying i could live without cable tv, internet if i lived there like that.

(I've lived in Hawaii before with no phone, internet, tv....but i was living and eating thanks to the Marine Corps)

I remember back in high school hardly anyone had cell phones and the internet was still on dial-up. no wonder kids these days are all lazy and overweight.
