just wondering what was the longest you guys didn't have a job? some of my college buddies didn't get anything for a year or two after graduation, pretty depressing to think right now especially since a lot of these guys were mechE or compsci grads.

I started working when I was 15 (part time) and have been gainfully employed or self-employed ever since-- nearing on 30 years!! Not always "good" or well-paying jobs -- and a couple of loss years in self employ (now that's a b**** -- work all year and end up worse off then if you'd just stayed home and watched TV) -- but I've never pounded the pavement and the only resume I ever dummied up was the in my final year of college.

Im 41 also started working at 15 and have always been employed... Until June of 09. Since then I've been looking for a full time job and doing contract graphic design and project management. It sucks.

For every opening in the design world there are 150+ applicants.

I've been able to keep my family fed but I've lost my house, car savings, and other material possessions.

8 months, looking for my first job after graduating college. I also spent about 6 weeks unemployed after moving from Chicago to Houston a couple of years later. That's it. Which is good, because I can't afford it anymore.

I have been working full time since I was 18 (34 years). I have been fortunate to spend that entire time with two companies and when I left the first, it was on my own accord.

I'm 32 and I've never been unemployed, but I do consider myself relatively lucky.

I think the OP is talking more about a fulltime career type job. A lot of people didn't have jobs while in high school or college, but I wouldn't classify that as being "unemployed" per se.

I was unemployed for 6 months back in 2000. Of course I had some part time jobs during that time, but I was mostly forced to live on loans and credit cards. That was a very dark time in my life.

I feel for you guys out there that are unemployed right now. Most of the people I started with at this company 8 years ago have been laid off during the last 2 years and most haven't found anything since then.

I try to remember that every time I catch myself complaining about my job...

I've been unemployed for the past year and a half since going back to school full time. But I usually fill up my time by pretending to run over squirrls with my dirt bike and making stories about it...how about you Xeno?

2 months, but ended up back at the same company. Great thing was, I was getting severance and commission owed to me over those 2 months, so it was like a long vacation.

    10 days. From November 30, 2008 until December 10, 2008. Otherwise, I have been employed since I was 15-years-old.

Started work at 18 and have been out of work maybe one week.

I'm 33 now and at a pretty secure place.

I feel bad for the unemployed and thank my lucky stars every single night.

Currently in my longest stretch... since mid-January of this year. But I'm a week shy of 24 and going back to school, so I guess it's not so bad.
