Okay, I'm just angry right now, and I've gotta vent. Hopefully this comes out right.

Anyways, I work for Wegman's (A supermarket that was ranked as the 2nd best place to work for by Fortune Magazine). Tonight, we had our "Holiday Party." Many prizes were given out in a "Let's Make a Deal"-type game. The grand prize was a television. First of all, there were three Sean's there, me being one of them. As they were drawing names to go up for prizes, they drew the first two Seans at the beginning of the game. Finally, as they were winding down the prizes, my boss says "Sean Free...." (persumably, trying to pronounce my last name, and thus giving the last Sean a chance at a prize. So, I start walking up there, with my whole table telling me to pick Prize number 1. Lo and behold, as I'm walking up to the game area, about five feet from it, my boss says, "Oh, that name's already been called." Now, I'm thinking that he got names mixed up or something, so I start walking back to my seat. Then, he says, "Well, since there's a Sean up, we'll give him a chance." Becuase of this, I turned back around and went to walk up to the game area, still going to pick prize 1. I got about 10 feet from the podium, and he says, "Oh wait, he's already won a prize too." I hadn't even been given a chance to win a prize, so I don't know what he was thinking. As I'm walking back to my seat, he draws the name of some stuck up, snobby girl. She walks up to the prize area and picks prize number 1. Lo and behold! She wins a 20 inch flat screen tv that was mine. I'm so pissed.

Tomorrow, after school, I'm calling my employee representative and giving her my mind. I doubt they'll do anything, except maybe buy me lunch, but that's not what I want. If nothing is done, I'm out. I'm finding another job. Even if they just offer to buy me lunch, I'm out. I don't even feel like reporting to work tomorrow, I'm that pissed. I don't know, I feel I'm overreacting, but oh well. I'm an 18 year-old, who asked for a television for Christmas, but was unable to get one. I work for minimum wage, and I feel like I have the right to be respected as an employee.

What do you think the company should do about this? Am I overreacting? Would you be mad?

Yup, you're overreacting. Nope, I wouldn't be mad (though I'd be somewhat disappointed).

But this is easy for me to say 'cause I'm not working at a supermarket and don't need another color TV.

    Throw money at the problem.

I've found that money solves pretty much every problem.

Seriously, have you ever seen a sad person on a waverunner?

I reall had no opportunity then. My boss announced someone else's name right away, so I sat down. There were about 200 people there, and I'm not one to make that big of a commotion. Right after the girl won the television, the party ended.

I can understand you being upset, but you messed up by not holding your ground when they called your name. You should have made it clear they were wrong at the time.

The boss owes you an apology. And if he doesn't give you one, start being a crappy employee. Hungry? Take a bag of chips. Thirsty? Wow there's a free Coke. Something in your eye? New policy if item doesn't scan, it's free.

The thing is, as crapy gifts, they gave out things like tuna or poptarts...I should be entitled to some of those at their expense.

Or have sex with his wife, no matter what he does to you, you can still say you had sex with his wife.

But honestly, couldn't you just have said that it was a different Sean or you hadn't won a prize yet?

i'd be pissed too but it's just a TV. it's not like a significant raise or really anything of dire NEED. i'd tell the boss the situation and let your feelings be known. if you don't like working there anyway, look for a new job and quit once you have another one lined up.

You should go out and buy lipstick and vaseline for the next time you get boned.

Those kinds of stories are the things I'd have nightmares about if I had nightmares.

Man, that sucks. I know you are mad, but doing anything that would get you fired will only hurt you more than your boss.

Don't quit until you have another job lined up. Trust me on that one as I speak from experience.

That's a lot of bubble gum to stick in your pockets to make up for one TV. :)

When your name was called, you should've spoken up. It didn't have to be confrontational or anything. Just start approaching him, waving your hands all excited like, and tell him "I'm the OTHER Sean!" If you do this with a cheerful tone in your voice, people will know you are just happy to have your name called. They wouldn't have thought you were being confrontational or hammy.

Of course, it is easy for me to look back and tell you this. God knows it is easy to freeze up in situations like that. We all have moments like this when we look back at a specific moment and think, WTF why didn't I speak up?

Hesitation like that could cost you stuff like a promotion or meeting the right girl. Missing out on a TV is actually a small price to pay for this important lesson. ;)

You should quit only AFTER they give you a 20" TV, they owe it to you. This is the bottom line.

Another for "you should have spoken up" You have to assert yourself. Most you will get now is an apology and some consolation prizes tops.

    Sorry man...live and learn.
