You know what he said at tonite's TNT? He said "I didn't say he can't play, I only said I don't think he can get up so soon"(Some kind of this). LOL
Barkley backtracking on his early assertion of Yao Ming. He was saying that he never meant that he couldn't play but that it would take him more time to be a good player. He sounded mad and said he wishes people would leave it alone
So does that mean that people who say negative things and demand for Francis to be traded are racist towards african americans???
Just kidding here fellas. Remember months ago when some board members thought sportscasters like Barkley were racist when they said Ming couldn't play? The search function is down, so the joke's not worth it...
No, no. Look at the time man. It's at this point of the night, right after the "everything if funny peak," that we hit the "was that a joke valley." I'm sure people tomorrow will know it was a jest.
Even though Barkley's big mouth can piss us all of some times, I have to support him here. I heard him say that he thought Ming would be a solid contributor in the future, but he didn't think he'd be this big this soon... and he did seem to want to focus more on making fun of him than talking about his potential, but that's Barkley.
i remember barkley was saying oh yao ming never see brother that can jump n run that are so atheletic well its more likely to me that barkely never see a chinese guy that can play n dominant. i do think barkley is racist cuz he didnt think a chinses guy can play ball this good just as good as any color. but i think he is racist not becuz of hatred but becuz he dunno much about other races.
Fatcow, Try not to throw the racist tag out so freely. It's not racist to think someone from a particular race may not be as good at something ,based on the fact that none of them have done it before.Naive, stupid, uninformed whatever you want to call it but it doesn't make someone a racist. Save the racist remarks people who really deserve it.
re: racism and Barkley... I think people are picking on Barkley and calling him a racist without considering a few facts... 1. Yao Ming is exceptionally tall. The history of exceptionally tall players in the NBA, pre-Ming, was a history of guys like Muresan, big stiffs, and pre-2002 Shawn Bradley, not very impressive either. 2. Yao looked awful his first couple of games in the NBA. 3. Bradley was not alone in predicting failure for Ming. It was a fairly common prediction. 4. The difference between racism and ignorance. Chinese basketball is really in its infancy and not a lot of people in the US have been following it. Therefore, guys like Barkley and Dick Vitale had no experience with how Yao Ming played. They were basing judgements off of what they could see (his first couple NBA games), or just plain hunches (I *think* Ming is gonna be another LaRue Martin). Now, what I'd consider racism would be to say, "Chinese people just can't play basketball" despite clear evidence that Yao Ming most certainly can. Racism is painting a whole people with a brush of prejudice. Dave
Well that may be part of racism but it certainly doesn't make someone a "racist"...for instance, if I feel that Australians wouldn't make great hockey players...That would not make me a racist. Anyway wrong forum so thats all I'll say about it.
Race and nationality aren't the same thing. I don't think Barkley was necessarily trying to be racist but he really came off that way to a lot of people, particularly Asian fans. It wasn't one of Barkley's better moments.
NO ONE thought Yao would be this good this soon. There are many people who thought he would be good and many who thought he would be awful, but Yao has gone through the most difficult transition to the NBA of any player ever. No way anyone thought he would be as good as he has been in the last 8 games this fast. That would be like predicting Michael Jordan would be the best player in the history of the NBA 20 games into his rookie year. You just couldn't do that.
