The only significance attached to any sports logo is almost always a matter of a team's performance. If the Rockets had not won championships in 1994 and 1995, but instead won them in 1996 and 1997, I guarantee you that practically everyone, hands down, would prefer those uniforms and that symbol because it would be the one you would see under the slogan 1996-1997 World Champions. Short of something pornographic, any logo or album cover is ultimately going to be judged on the quality of the product's performance. What else could explain the Beatle's White Album getting votes for one of the top 10 best album covers of all time? Sure, there are exceptions, but look around the NBA- sorry, but you could make a case that the Celtics, Lakers, Bulls, Pistons, 76ers, and Spurs logos are all either stupid or boring. You think Spurs fans really give a hoot that their symbol is from a friggin' boot? Heck no, and heck no. I mean, a boot spur now symbolizes a champion. How about the Lakers? Yeah, their logo is wonderful. Oh, and if we're gonna get into this, let's change these completely inappropriate names that were not changed following relocations: 1. Utah Jazz 2. Los Angeles Lakers 3. Memphis Grizzlies. Please bring on the regular season so we can stop all this nonsense about logos. What an utter waste of 500+ messages.
Well said. It's a new era, new associations to be made. I think the logo will look cool when the new uniforms arrive. Until the Rockets start to win with this logo it's gonna be hard not to look at the logo and think of BVS.
Yep. Association with "good memories" is very powerful. Good thing we never won a championship with the "clown suits!" LOL!!! Now, lets win a few with the new ones.
I don't think my appreciation for various logos is much impacted by the success of the team wearing it. And, it -- and the idea that logos like the Celtics' or Lakers' were timeless -- had me thinking about what I did like in a logo. So, I looked at them and made a list (excluding the Rockets). In my list, "Great" are logos that should never be significantly changed; "Good" is looks fine but I won't miss it if they change it or do an update; "Not Good" is still not something I'd be embarrassed to have on a T-shirt, but I wish they'd change the logo; and "Terrible" is a logo that is so bad, I'd only wear it inside the house. Great Milwaukee Bucks New York Knicks Portland Trailblazers Seattle Sonics Good Atkanta Hawks Chicago Bulls Dallas Mavericks Denver Nuggets Golden State Warriors Indiana Pacers Miami Heat Sacramento Kings Washington Wizards Not Good Boston Celtics Cleveland Cavaliers Detroit Pistons LA Clippers LA Lakers Memphis Grizzlies Minnesota Timberwolves New Jersey Nets Philadelphia 76ers Phoenix Suns San Antonio Spurs Utah Jazz Terrible New Orleans Hornets Orlando Magic Toronto Raptors
Great logos in my opinion: New England Patriots - current Carolina Panthers Texans SeaHawks Boston Breakers -USFL Miami Heat Mighty Ducks Ottawa Senators New England Revolution Carolina Mudcats BYU Cougars Miami Hurricanes Penn St Yankees Red Sox Here is a great-great logo source. http://www.logoserver.com/NBA.html
I noticed how the logo actually has a lower case "h" in the mix with the upper case "R". Was that by design or just a cool by-product of the "R"?
Lol. I don't think it matters if it is any good or not. What matters is what the market (of which I am a paticle) thinks is a good logo. Those are mine. Which ones do you like?
Nope! It is an upper case "H". I think it is by design. The two tails of R form the stand of "H" and the loop form the cross bar. It is both "H" and "R", Houston and Rocket.
you think the sonics logo is good? It's an S with a couple of words in a box next to it. The S is a nice secondary logo (kind of like this H/R is a nice secondary logo...) I'm a sucker for retro stuff being updated, I'd like it if the circle that the rocket is going through on this new logo were the old 80's logo, maybe with the basketball updated to silver...and with 'houston rockets' around the ring (obviously it wouldn't say rockets across the ball now.) but the old logo as a launching pad for the new one.dope.
