I have been with Southwestern Bell in the past but I was looking for a better deal if it is out there. I am on the Northwest side of town, but still listed as Houston. When we lived further north, just outside of Houston we had to get the Metro line so that it wasn't long distance on calls to and from Houston. Hopefully I won't need that anymore.
Any suggestions on local phone companies?

    Thanks!

Sage is cheaper than SWB. You'll probably still have to get a metro line, but sage is cheaper than SWB. Plus, you get 100 minutes of long distance included a month with sage.

I have Sage too, and found them to be the cheapest.

However, I also found that they have the worst customer service, don't listen to what you say, and even lie to get your business.

I almost fired them 2 weeks after I signed up. But then I realized what a cheap b*stard I am.

Have you considered broadband phone service?

Time Warner has their own phone service but I don't think they're offering it in Houston yet.

After an extremely frustrating conversation with SBC, I have decided to just use my cell for awhile.

I called and asked about service, got prices, and while they were a bit pricey for everything we wanted, I set it up to the point of choosing a phone number and getting a confirmation.

Then the guy puts me on hold for a few minutes.

When he comes back he proceeds to tell me that he is sorry but he gave me the WRONG prices. This time everything is at least $10.00 more a month. The cost to get an unlisted number is not a $4.95 one time fee but 4.95 A MONTH!!!! WTF?! To not list in the phone book is 4.95 per month?!
We can get the metro line but the package deal with unlimited long distance is not available as a package with it for 20.00 but rather 48.95 and we have to pay for everything separately. They do have another package that includes Call Notes for 25.00 a month more. When I say I don't want call notes, he tells me that to take it off I have to pay 35.00 for another package that has everything that package has EXCEPT Call Notes. I ask "Are you telling me that I have to pay 10.00 to NOT have Call Notes?" He says "Uh... I guess."

What kind of stupid bull crap is that?

At that point I told him their prices were ridiculous and said I would use my cell phone.

Later SBC, you suck.

Maybe you should check out Z-Tel. They seem to be pretty cheap.
