Substitute charged in fight with student Posted on Thu, Oct. 18 By NIRVI SHAH AND ANI MARTINEZ nshah@MiamiHerald.com Authorities charged Joseph Brazer with felony battery and held him on $5,000 bond Thursday.A Broward County substitute teacher was charged with felony battery Wednesday for tackling a student in the classroom of a Fort Lauderdale alternative school, officials said. Joseph Wynn Brazer, 35, of Dania Beach was arrested after students broke up a fight between Brazer and Shelton Davis, 18, a student at Whiddon-Rogers Education Center, 700 SW 26th St. Here's what happened, according to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department: Students in a reading class began turning the lights on and off. Brazer turned the lights back on. When he had his back to the students, someone threw a dictionary at him. He called security. Prior to this incident ''Brazer had some kind of negative problems with Davis, so when someone threw the dictionary, he assumed it was him,'' said Detective Kathy Collins, a Fort Lauderdale spokeswoman. ``He lunged at the kid, tackled him and pinned him down. He was punching him. Kids started breaking it up, but when the student broke free, he lunged at the teacher.'' Brazer knocked out one of Davis' teeth and chipped another one, Collins said. ''The teacher was the primary aggressor,'' Collins said. ``But the student was more than willing to fight back.'' Police officials are still unsure if Davis threw the dictionary at Brazer, but the Broward State Attorney's Office will decide if Davis will be charged with battery for the incident. Whiddon-Rogers Education Center is an alternative school for middle and high school students who are unsuccessful in a traditional school setting. Students can be as old as 21. Brazer has substituted at the school on and off this year and last school year, according to a school spokeswoman. Brazer, who was hired as a substitute teacher in August 2005, has been taken off the substitute list. http://www.miamiherald.com/466/story/275821.html --- The teacher kicked the kid's ass. The last sentence cracks me up, oh really?
Looks like Mr. Brazer is going back to his old dishwashing job at Elizondo's Cuban Sandwich Stand....
Back when I used to sub, I actually killed a 10-grader who was giving me problems. I'll tell you this, his parents will never find the body, either.
pssh.. the kid only threw a book. when i was going to HS, a kid through the roller ball of a computer mouse at the teacher. they're getting soft these days.
Exactly this isn't a Kid people... This same kid can quit school and join the damn war. Start using a rifle and blow peoples brain out ...
Yeah, I think getting hit with a dictionary would hurt more than getting hit with a little rubber ball.
I don't know about that. Those roller balls are about as hard as a marble, and probably heavier than a marble of equal size. Getting hit by the corner of a dictionary (or any book, for that matter), would hurt, but its size makes it relatively awkward to throw, unlike a roller ball, which you could hurl with significant force. I'll take the book any day.
