When is the last time a passing poit guard won the NBA finals? Magic Johnson the game has change you need an agressive scoring guard to win the finals now if you haven't been paying attention Kobe was bringing the up the court for the Laker 3 titles.

I guess you've never heard of Zeke. That already makes it pointless to argue with you.

Unless you think Derek Fisher is a scoring point guard, I'll go with him.

He's not much of a passing pg either if his career assist numbers are to be believed.

More of a "give the ball to Shaq/Kobe and standing around and spotting up on occasion" pg, sort of like Kenny Smith, although Kenny was a much better scorer.

    Perhaps the better question is:

when was the last time a score first PG won the NBA title?

most of the recent ones have been decent players whose only real responsibility is getting the ball up the court. What a terrible thread...

I guess the answer is that we need a crappy point guard who can shoot 3's and do little else.

    Exactly!!!

A better question is "when was the last time a score first pg that cant score won anything?"

Mark Jackson was a great passer in his young days, but he is solid passer at his advanced age. Solid passers aren't crappy point guards. However, solid passers who can shoot the ball well from outside are not too expensive. The point guard does not have to dunk to be an effective player.

It's foolhardy to include the teams that have dominant ball players like Michael Jordan, Shaq, Hakeem, or Duncan. Noone on this team is of that caliber including Yao. I don't think anyone is going to mistake Steve's play on the court as Michael Jordanesque too. The Rockets better play ultimate team ball like the Kings or Mavs before any ideas of championships pop up in Rocket fandom. Team ball starts at the top with the guy who handles the ball the most. That would be the point guard position.

Zeke also dished out 9.3 dimes a game. If Zeke was a scorer, so was Magic and Big O. Look at the Pistons during those championship years, which player would you consider to be a better scoring option than Zeke. This is why Sixers fans don't have a problem with AI taking all the shots, cuz he's their best (and only) scoring option. The fact that Zeke still dished is what him even more amazing.

You either need a dominant big man or Michael Jordan.

The best way to word this question is what championship team in the history of the NBA has had a primary scorer be the point guard. If it wasn't for Hakeem, Rockets would have been hitting the lottery in those championship years.

I think we're onto something here. Derek Fisher got owned bigtime by Mike Bibby. Kenny Smith got owned by Harper. Smith and Fisher have 5 rings. I don't remember all the scrub point guards on the Bulls, but I'm sure they got owned repeatedly. That's 6 more rings.

11 rings in the past 15 years or so by non-pass, non- shoot point guards. Therefore, the choice is obvious:

    Steve Francis for Charlie Ward.

    NOW.

Sam Cassell... starting PG on a championship team?

    Sorry, wrong answer.

Kenny Smith was the starter. Sam was a super sub. And when Hakeem was on the court - yes - his primary responsibility was bringing the damn ball up the court and then giving it to him (or Clyde).

It's extremely amusing that the underlying facts of the argument being used to support Steve... pretty much totally support the opposite conclusion.

Throw Francis onto teams with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in their primes, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in their primes, and Hakeem Olajuwon at his peak along with Clyde Drexler.

Let's see, the consensus greatest player of all time, two of the top 4 or 5 greatest big men of all time, and two, and arguably three top 50 players of all time....each at their absolute best.

You think he'd be ring-less then? Crap, I think Moochie could take those teams to the top.
