    Russell Robinson joins Houston Rockets

    By Gary Bedore
    June 27, 2008, 9:32 p.m. Updated June 28, 2008, 12:00 a.m.

Russell Robinson has accepted an invitation to play for the Houston Rockets’ summer-league team.

The former Kansas point guard has joined the Rockets as an undrafted free agent.

“I worked out for them twice. They liked me,” Robinson said Friday. “They said they can use a guy like me.”

Robinson said he was a tad disappointed he wasn’t selected in Thursday’s NBA Draft. He accepted the Rockets’ offer just an hour after the draft ended.

“I wanted to get drafted just to go down in the record books,” Robinson said. “But I talked to coach (Bill Self) before the draft and he said it might be best to not get drafted and pick a team or go to a team that really wants me. It’s an ongoing audition (for the NBA or Europe).”

wow man...I LOVE THESE NEWS!!! I was refreshing the BBS every 2 mins for like the last 5 hours literally...

at first I read it was "russian robinson joins the houston rockets..." I was like what?? Did we get ramunas siskouskas or something??? and then I read the article I thought he was an american playing in europe and now want to come back to NBA......" LOL

Never heard of this guy before...but I'd love ANY PG onboard our team...Brooks is really nice but I think we'd get more value from him if we traded him than if we play him...

This guy can take Loren Woods roster spot...any refreshing PG next season other than Rafer I'd covet heavily......

man I'm so excited...no wonder I'm refreshing this bbs every 2 mins...... :D

He is a nice player , he has a chance to make the team.
He is a very good defender.
Needs to still show he can be a full time pg , need to improve outside shot to have a chance.

I don't see him making the team unless we make some cuts and trades that clear up space.

LOL.......you guys kill me with the constant Rafer bashing. He has been one of our most consistent players for the past few seasons. The problem is he is playing to many minutes just like the rest of our starters and is beaten up and worn down by the end of the season.

You have to be kidding. Right? Rafer has been anything but consistent. He was pathetic in the first half of last year. He was pathetic in the playoffs last year. He played good most of the second half and for the games he was not injured he played well in this years playoffs. I will give him some props for playing the best basketball as a Rocket and in his career this year (2008). Because of that showing I will give him a pass for the beginning of 08/09 season. But if he reverts to his poor shooting and ball hogging ways and he forgets his role than adios Rafer. He is not Chris Paul and should never act like it by taking ill advised shots that completely disrupting the offensive flow. My concern is he is an old dog who will revert to his old ways and won't learn any new tricks easily.

I'm not willing to give him a pass. We must get another experienced PG on this team. Our PG debacle is a combination of having (1) a below average starter (2) backed up by nothing.

I'd like to see the Rockets invite Richard Roby from Colorado. He's 6-6, has a nice shooting stroke and is fairly athletic.

I can't disagree with you. My preference is to replace Rafer. But if Rafer consistently plays as well as he did in the playoffs and 22 win streak than at least he won't be the worst pg starter in the league. That's an improvement over what I thought last year. And I could settle for a good backup that is pushing for the starting role and brings a more consistent shot.

There wasn't any Rafer bashing going on in this thread til you opened your trap.

I'm glad they are bringing in someone of note. Who knows, maybe he'll impress. Of course John Lucas 3 was impressive in summer league so ... expectations are in the gutter as of right now.

Wow this Robinson kid put a stop to Scott Reynolds (Villanova), Stephon Curry (Davidson), Ty Lawson (North Carolina), and Derrick Rose (Memphis) in the NCAA Tourney. Not to mention a whole host of others including OJ Mayo in the regular season. If he could shoot he would've been lottery.

Would rather have Mike Green from Butler. I am absolutely amazed the guy was drafted at all since from the 5 or 6 games I watched of him this year he is a first round talent. He averaged 15-6-5 this past year and was a four year starter who averaged at least 11 pts 4 rebs and 4 assists every season. From what I saw he's a very smart player who is 6'1 but has a lot of upper body muscle on his frame which makes up for it a little. He also averaged over a steal a game and shot .350 from 3's in his career including .371 this past year. Then perhaps his best stat ... he never averaged more than 2 turnovers a game in any season. Let me remind you he was the starting PG his freshman year and averaged less turnovers than say Mayo or Gordon this past year.

So you have a PG who can score, shot the three very well, has good court vision, and plays good defense. I really can't believe he wasn't drafted in late first round let alone at all.

Some people act like we just signed Chris Paul. Dude probably won't play 1 second for the Rockets in the regular season.
