19-10. to this day, nearly three years later, my texan hat still draws hushed whispers, sighs of anguish and quiet condemnation whenever i break it out on my friends and neighbors here in dallas.

but this - this is bigger. this feels special. tmac is on a dream-like level right now. yao is hard to root against and the rest of the team is a group of scrubs playing their hearts out. hmmmmm... sounds a lot like the last champion to grace the city's presence, doesn’t it...?

i certainly thought they could extend dallas, maybe even beat them in a long, tough series – i’ve always thought the mavs were VASTLY overrated - but winning both games here? after game 1, i thought it was possible when i saw the rockets punch dallas in the mouth and not back down, but not prior to. now i'm convinced this maverick team would have a difficult time competing in the wnba, which is where teams with no balls belong, btw.

so what’s it been like, living amidst the absolute easiest fans in the world to despise with every fiber of your being...? i haven’t been up prior to 6am for any reason beyond work since... well, not since i’ve had cognitive memories. yesterday and again today, however, i was up at 5:30, driving to work like i was in a perpetual school zone, taking my time soaking up all the vitriol and fire and trying like hell to avoid getting hit by all the lame fans here crashing back down to earth. fun? i don’t think that’s a strong enough word. giddy would certainly work its way into the equation...

a week ago, all the talk here was about PHOENIX - how do we stop PHOENIX? how do we match-up with PHOENIX? won't it be fun to play PHOENIX?... whenever the rockets were brought up, they'd be quickly dismissed, usually with a sneering chuckle: "who's gonna guard dirk nowitzski?" well, we have our answer: ryan bowen, b****es. or is that chucky brown? feels the same, doesn't it?

what i couldn't believe was that no one here was asking who on the mavs was going to stop tmac? yao? and NO ONE mentioned the coaching discrepancy. JVG has coached circles around avery "auerbach" - the greatest 18-game coach in nba history. you would have thought he was named pope the way people here carried on about him. turns out he's about as good a coach as he was a player - a loud blowhard who was always more talk than action. i still hate him for his antics in the 95 WCF when he tried to convince every one that robinson was better than, or even on par with, dream.

speaking of that match-up, dream's jock-loosening spin move on robinson has a new partner in rocket playoff lore - mcgrady's rim-rocking spluge dump on bradley's head is not only an all-timer, but the quickest computer wallpaper download in recorded history. it’s also been plastered all over various screens of co-workers, too, who have been auspiciously quiet this morning...

no idea where this goes; no idea if they can even beat dallas, but... these first two games have been remarkable. this has a '95 feel to it... we even get PHX in round 2 and possibly SA in round three - same journey dream and drexler took after shocking a division foe in round 1. bears mentioning...

whatever happens, there are no words to describe the delirious fun it is to be in the thick of dallas' meltdown, to bear witness to the mass exodus from the bandwagon.

19-10 was great. but this... this has the potential to be special.

    Ric --

what's amazing to me is how people from all over the country share that view of Dallas fans as being so easy to despise. i have friends from the east coast; friends from colorado; friends from california; friends in Florida...all of them talk about how obnoxious Dallas fans are. and if you spend any time in Texas it's easily confirmed.

makes these wins soooo much sweeter! :)

    first off, great thread!

as for the games having a '95 feel to them, for a while yesterday, i thought both yao and tmac were both going to score over 40 points just like dream and clyde did in the same game against utah in the opening round

If Dallas fans weren't so friggin' conceited...

(yes, I know I'm generalizing a city full of millions of people) They all believe that their city and sports teams are the best in the world. They have no humility at all.

There's always one key game in a playoff run that makes you go, "wow...this team is real." Where you see the team perform and know they CAN win the big one.

In 94, for me, it was Game 4 against the Suns.

In 95, for me, it was Game 1 against the Jazz.

I think it's entirely possible that last night was that kind of game. Hearing that confirmed by guys like Magic and Charles was nice, as well. :D

a friend from Denver was driving through Dallas on the way home a year or so ago. he calls me and says, "this city sucks!! i'm listening to sports radio and all they're talking about is how the Cowboys are going to be Super Bowl favorites (going into the 2004 season)."

i lived in the dallas media market when i went to college. there is no other team in any other league other than dallas. they talk about nothing else. and every other team is vastly inferior. that was back in the mid-90's and they used to view Houston as Texas' "other city." That is no longer the case, frankly. That tone doesn't exist as much anymore. After building 3 new facilities..hosting Super Bowl and All Star Game...NLCS Game 7...19-10...and on and on...even most folks in Dallas, when they're honest, know they're owned right about now! :)

You know what must be really scary for the Dallas basketball fans?

They now see what we have in Tmac and Yao...an realize how young they are...

Now....consider if we are able to get a athletic rebounding and defensive power forward that can hit Juwon shots...

That is the only *true* weakness...yea..we need some depth...yea..we could use a true point...but we get by without them..

Get us a good 4 this offseason..with Juwon as a backup...and we are gonna be competing for the best team in Texas title..and the Mavs will be also-rans.

That has to really pissoff the Dallas fans if they are able to realistically look at the teams (unlikley I know).

Yes, a power forward away to be a true contender. 100% agreed!

I lived in Dallas for years. I hated all Dallas teams and their fans, starting with the Cowboys. The Mavs were pretty benign back then. Mavs fans didn't have anything to be proud of before the Cuban era.

    Well said.

Those painful days of sitting around Maverick fans chanting "Dirk" in a Houston arena may be coming to an end.

The Maverick organization has got to be so frustrated on the changes that they have made over the years to no avail, when winning it all primarily requires 1 thing.

    Defense

They pretend to have it. Since Avery has come, he has stressed it. Great defensive coaches are not bread overnight.

Dallas is getting out offensed, defensed, coached, and quite frankly b**** slapped.

It couldn't happen to a better owner.

what pisses me off is the disdain some Mavs fans have for Houston. I've heard comments like, "How can we be losing to Houston?" and in utter shock that they're not going to win this series in 5 or 6 games. I don't expect any Mavs fan to believe in the Rockets, but to be oblivious to the fact that we are in fact a worthy opponent is what really sticks me. I've never gone into this series cocky, and even now up 2-0, I'm still very cautious. It's been pointed out over and over again that the last T-Mac-led team dropped a 3-1 advantage in the playoffs. It ain't over 'til it's over.

i think that's a product of our recent playoff absences/failure and their recent playoff presence/success. that's probably fair.

The Cowboys and us America's team fans are awesume--stick through the thick and thin (mostly the latter lately), but after that, yeah, can't think of much positive to say about the city or sports.

MadMax & Relativist: You guys have summed it up beautifully. I have been here (Dallas) since 1994 and the Dallas sports scene has ALWAYS looked down on their Houston counterparts so this should come as no big surprise. If I had a dollar for every time I've been told by folks up here that the only reason the Rockets won 2 championships was because Jordan was playing baseball, I would be one rich HillBoy. Of course, they don't respect us and you know what? I don't care one whit. They can keep their arrogance & disrespect. We'll just keep polishing our TWO Larry O'Brien trophies.

Solid put it best: The Mavericks may look great on paper but the game is played on wood.

<<<<------Been in Dallas for a couple of years now myself and you guys are dead on about thier attitude toward Houston as a whole, not just sports. These people up here really think that they're better than Houston in every facet. But back to B-Ball.........I ran out of my apartment screaming.........."Rockets b****ES!!!!" It felt SOOOOOOO good too.

I want to see what Blackistone has to say today on around the horn!!! "Mavs in 6" is probably what he'll say.

Max, it really has that feel to it, doesn't it? Still way too early... way too early, but just a sweet feeling after last night. A warm glow. And you can't wait for the next game. Just relishing it.

Great post, Ric. Hell, it's Dallas. To a native Houstonian, Dallas has always sucked. Always. They've always looked down their collective noses at H-town, which makes beating them, in any sport, so much the better.

    Rock on, Rockets!
