Little Steve Francis story a colleague told me yesterday (no pictures)

Okay, I cannot swear to all the details of this, but this is what a fellow student told me yesterday and I am relatively sure he did not make it up.

The guy is from Seattle originally, but he has his own company in Tokyo/Japan and has been living there the past few years. He is a basketball fan, but, due to being in Japan, didn't really get to follow the NBA closely at all the past two, three years.

So the guy was at the airport (if I remember correctly) in Seattle on the 28th or 29th and he has one of these T-Mobile smartphones (must be something new, combination of PDA and phone or something). Anyway, he was using that at the airport when some guy wearing some Houston Rockets gear came up to him and said "Hey, what's that thing, can I have a look at that?" My colleague said "Sure, no problem"...so the guy with the Houston Rockets clothes checked it out and said "Cool, I want to get one like that"...

They talked about that thing for a little bit and while doing that, my colleague kind of figured (I guess from the clothes or something, probably there were some other players around as well) that this guy must be a team member of the Rockets...so he asked him..."Hey, so you play for the Rockets? You playing the Sonics?" And the guy went, "Yeah, I'm Steve Francis". Problem is, my colleague had maybe heard the name once or twice, but didn't really have an idea about Steve Francis being an all-star or anything...also, my colleague played some college ball and he said for some reason, when he heard the other guy is a professional basketball player, while they were talking he was (in his mind) sizing Stevie up and thinking...hey...this guy is not that huge...I can take this guy...(I told him yesterday how good Francis is, that he's an all-star, that he has a 40-something vertical etc. and my colleague was laughing since he didn't have a clue about all that...).

So he obviously didn't act too impressed (since he didn't even know who Steve Francis is) and just said with not too much interest..."Ok...so you play on the Rockets...cool"...and then he remembered that he had read about Yao Ming and said (more excited)..."But hey, don't you have this tall Chinese dude now? You must be excited!!!"

When my colleague told me that, I thought "uh, Francis must have been pissed that he only seemed to be interested in Ming"...but my colleague said that Francis was really cool and friendly and said "yeah, we are really happy to have him" or something like that...

Overall, my colleague had the impression that Francis was a really cool and nice guy, acting natural and not acting like an arrogant star at all.

No inside information or anything important, but I thought I'd share that little story with you guys. Nice to hear how normal and friendly Francis seems to act. As I said, I wasn't there, but I have no reason to think the guy (he is a rather serious guy) would invent that stuff. He only told me that story since I mentioned that I am a big Rockets fan and they have these great players like Ming, Mobley, Francis...when I mentioned Francis, he said, hey I talked to this guy.

    That's all :).

Thanks for the story :). But I thought it'd be about a young Franchise ("Little Steve Francis Story")

Luckily he didn't ask Stevie to get Yao's autograph for him.

When some man in the lobby of some
random airport knows the name "Yao."

That's when you know he's made it BIG!

Francis should be used to this by now.

Steve Francis' demeaner makes me think he's a grown up kid living out his dream. He's nice and friendly. He might not be arrogant, but he still wants to bust you up with his skills...

Did you ask your friend what was that "thing" Steve wanted to look at?

That's one of the things that DO like about
    Francis.

On the court: He's NOT a nice-guy (Grant Hill), and he's NOT a total cocky punk (Kobe).

Put it this way, he knows when to be nice
    and when to be mean.

But, I still think we are missing our "Mario
Elle" on this team...maybe Hawkings. Not sure
    yet.

Their is not a nicer guy in the NBA then Steve Francis. The few times I've seen him around he was about as nice as one could be.

    I believe that was it:

I don't know if it is good or bad. My colleague seemed to have some technical problem with it, but it's one of these new things that gadget freaks like to have... :)
