So I"m going to do an interview next week for a company , for which one of my good friends just interviewed for last week. Now he's asking me what company I'm interviewing for.

Should I tell him? Or should I lie and use a different company? Its going to be awkward because I need to ask HIM some questions about the interview process, as this is my first major one for an internship, particularly this one.

    Any advice?

Be straight up with him. Getting caught in a lie, especially by a friend, is never a good thing.

agreed. tell him. Aside from it being the thing to do, if not there will be part of you that would be relieved if you didn't get it because you wouldn't have to tell him, and that's additional negativity you don't need.

additional negativity. I like it. ™

I guess the middle road would be to tell him, to assuage your guilt; but then kill him: not to increase your odds, but just to reduce the chance of you resenting him were he to get it.

Yeah do that. Or say you applied to several and didn't think you'd get called up by this company.

I don't know why you'd want to keep it from it. So what if you get it and he doesn't, it's all game. Free for all when it comes to these type of things.

Same position as the friend interviewed for?

Did you sign up for it after learning he'd interviewed with them?

Why are you feeling guilty about asking him?

A true friend would still be happy if you got the job and he/she didn't. What matters most is that one of you gets the job. Remember that there are several other candidates out there who might get the job too.

Now if it was an A or B scenario where one of you was getting the job and the other wasn't (only two candidates total), then I don't think it would be fair for you to ask for interview advice.

I don't see an issue here. A lot of friends apply for the same positions, especially if you have the same majors and are looking to get into similar fields.

Call the hiring manager back and tell him he has NO RIGHT to tell you when the interview is. Tell him it's a scam and you're onto him. You'll show up when you damn well please. Be firm in your demands. It's just a stupid job.

And when you DO show up, for the love of all that is holy, do NOT wear a tie.

Agreed. Besides, what if you actually get the job? You're going to have to tell him eventually.

Agreed. My students interview for the same companies all the time. You might get to intern together! If he decides he doesn't want the internship, he can recommend you and vice versa.

Tell your friend. Don't be that guy.

Of course you should tell him. If he did badly on his interview he might tell you the questions. I've had that happen before.

Just remember to take it all in stride when the interviewer asks if your mom was a prostitute.
