Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router at home is blowing chucks. My cable supplied broadband access thingy is up and down like yoyo, more so recently. My Linksys router is now requiring a hard cycle every day, just to keep connected. This is my second Linksys router in five years to go. Is this what everybody else is experiencing? Does anybody else have a recommend for a more sturdy router? The one thing I like about the Linksys router is that it is dead simple to install and configure, especially since I set it up for open access.
Go for a "N" Router. I use the Linksys WRT150N. No problems, if you use it to game you can tweak it a bit.
yeah that too. If you have Comcast and youre using that brick modem that Time Warner handed out, go to your local Comcast store and get the new sleeker Scientific Atlanta modem. Those are great, never dropping connections.
AFAIK Linksys routers are supposed to be pretty reliable. I think you might have the super hackable model. There's some websites out there with details on what you can do with it. It's a pretty well known and used product among tech geeks.
PLease tell me you've done MAC ADDRESS restrictions, no SSID broadacast, access restrictions, etc., and the whole enchilada to secure your wireless access... I have the same router (no longer using it, for u-Verse provided a wireless gateway) and it works like a charm. Are you sure you're configuring it correctly on the web-based configuration tool?
i have that same router. same stuff was happening until i upgraded the firmware to DD-WRT. have not had a problem in 1 year since the upgrade... look for tutorials for DD-WRT online.
I have that same router, and don't have those issues. I agree that trading in your cable modem is a good first step.
If the hardware isn't bad, you could try loading DD-WRT onto it. I've done 3 and they all still work great.
I routinely had issues with my Netgear and Linksys routers. At least twice a week I would have to reset the router. I switched to the Apple Time Capsule a few months ago and have yet to see a router related issue. I have Macs, PCs and a wireless printer connected. A friend recently had issues with their Linksys router and had to trash it.
I bought a NetGear Wireless N router last night. It was fairly simple to install. Let's see if the NetGear can last longer than 2.5 years (average time to failure for the Linksys routers). The Linksys routers at Circuit City looked different from the ones I previously bought. It also appears that Cisco bought out Linksys, which may explain the different look. Silly thing is that if Cisco had rebranded the router with their name and removed the Linksys name I very well would have bought it. I installed the new router wide open, so if you drive by my house you can enjoy free wi-fi as long as Comcast and NetGear are behaving. (I did change the router password).
I went through three WRT54G routers , they all died . I bought a Net Gear WGR614 , and I haven't had a single problem with it . Ive had it for about a year now . I have my Comcast telephone modem and my 360 hooked up to it . I have never had any connection issues or XBL problems .
first off..have u determined if the router is at fault? have you tried connecting your cable modem directly to see how long your connection stays? if your cable modem is dropping your IP ..then of course you are gonna have to keep rebooting your router for it to catch that new ip. most of the time it should do it by itself ..but sometimes the cable modem acts gay about it.
Odd. I was having a similar problem with my router, and from what I could tell it was being caused by the number of bittorrent connections that were being left open on my router. I switched to Tomato firmware, which is totally awesome btw, and haven't seen the problem since. Moral of the story, don't throw that WRT out!
This could have been the problem. Just within the last month, I started to torrent a bit (vmware ubuntu appliances, mainly).
