shuffled loose its moral coil* over the weekend. I had owned it less than a year.

    Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router

I am now in the market for a replacement (4-port switch and wireless access point). Any suggestions?

    * can not get it to serve its admin pages via 192.168.1.1 and a browser; hooking the cable modem output directly to a PC worked.

    :p
If it is under one year. You might be able to get Linksys to replace it, tell them it was defective. ;)

Linksys is crap. Mine gave out on me also. Recently upgraded to a wireless router. Not sure which one, the cheapest best buy had. Haven't had any problems with it so far.

Mine caved in after about 1 year too, and I went and got the new one of the same with SPEED BOOST....

The only problem is that the new firmware fix screwed up the VPN...so until Linksys fixes it, I can't vpn....

    GRRR.

Happened the same thing to me but they replaced it even though I didn't have any proof of purchase.

Just call cust service and arrange and replacement.

I hope I can do that when mine craps out. It's been messing with my modem and had a horrible summer -- only bought it in March.

And I can't believe I was dumb enough to buy another Linksys after the hassles I had with my last one, and the hassles with their (admittedly belagured) help department.

I bought that model and took it back. It worked okay, but whenever I tried to run bittorrent I couldn't do anything else, even if I lowered the bandwidth on Azureus.

I've been running that router for about 3 years now I think. No problems yet.

Have you tried hitting the reset button on it - you'll lose your settings, but you may be able to get back to 192.168.1.1. Whenever that's happened to me, it's usually because of a firewall issue (like ZoneAlarm) or I changed and configured something in the router screwy.

I have that router too. 2 years, no problems.

    Love it.

What is the next line of wireless technology? Is Wireless G still the best?

There's MIMO-based routers that are faster, but still waiting for a standardization and are a mixed bag in terms of performance. When the standard becomes... uh... standard, they'll be known as 802.11n routers and they'll be "the next generation". Theoretically they'll be able to hit 200-600 mbps.... theoretically... :)

Go to Fry's and get the Airlink store brand..
They are cheap but work great. I owned Linksys, Dlink, and Netgear before and this Airlink 802.11g wireless + 4 port out performs them all for some reason. I actually have 2 of them - one of them is setup as a wireless hub to extend the range of the network.

Actually...check http://www.outpost.com for the Airlink products - you might get a better price than the store.

I have two of the Linksys routers. I lacked some features I needed, so I installed DDWRT, a free third-party firmware. It might be worthwhile to try and install it to see if it'll fix your problems.

I got my second Linksys router from FON for $13. It's a neat idea. Basically in exchange for making your connection available to users of the FON community, you get to use any of their access points for free.

Bittorrent only caused problems for me when I enabled QoS. It seems to take too much processing power to analyze and prioritize each piece of traffic that passed through the router, so I turned it off, and everything is fine.

I also like the Airlink stuff. I've bought 2 pieces of their hardware, at about 1/3 the price of Netgear, D-Link, or Linksys stuff, and I can't tell a difference in quality or speed.
