PRC sentences two to life in jail after Japanese sex party

A Chinese court yesterday sentenced two people to life in prison for organizing a sex party for hundreds of Japanese tourists that caused an uproar in China, the government announced.

Twelve other people were sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

The incident in September at a hotel in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai fell on a sensitive wartime anniversary and caused outrage in China. The Chinese government complained officially to Tokyo.

Chinese authorities have issued arrest warrants for three Japanese accused of organizing the sex party and asked Japan to help in detaining them, the official Xinhua News Agency said. It said China also asked the international police agency Interpol to circulate the warrants, suggesting that Chinese authorities didn't know where the three were.

Xinhua identified the three Japanese as Isao Hirobe, Shunji Takahashi and Koji Fukunaga. It didn't give any other details about them or how they were involved in the incident.

According to earlier Chinese news reports, about 400 Japanese men and as many as 500 Chinese hostesses had sex at the Zhuhai International Conference Center Hotel over a three-day period that ended on September 18.

That was the anniversary of a Japanese attack on a city in China's northeast in 1931 that many Chinese regard as the start of Japan's World War II invasion and occupation.

The 14 defendants - all of them reportedly Chinese - were charged with prostitution, soliciting, conspiracy and other offenses, according to an earlier report.

The trial began on Friday and ended Saturday amid tight security in the Zhuhai Intermediate Court. The public and nonessential court employees were barred from the courthouse by officials who cited privacy concerns.

Yesterday, the court sentenced Ye Xiang, assistant to the hotel's general manager, and Ming Zhu to life in prison, Xinhua said. It didn't give any other details about Ming.

The hotel's deputy sales manager, Liu Xuejing, was sentenced to 15 years.

Another defendant, Zhang Junying, was sentenced to 12 years, and the 10 others received between two and 10 years in prison, the report said.

Previous Chinese news reports have described the 14 defendants as two hotel employees and 12 organizers of prostitution.

Prostitution, although illegal, is common in China and is often practiced openly in tourist hotels in major cities.

But the timing of the event in Zhuhai drew anger as word spread over the Internet in China, where many feel that Japan has failed to atone for its wartime brutality.

    Misleading thread title.

Hm... strange, I've never seen any hotels openly practice prostitution in China's major cities.

Man, what's next? Arresting someone for having a sex toy party?

to do something like that on that specific day was a complete slap in the face to China.

Really? I kind of bet that there are orgies in the U.S. on the 4th of July or Veteran's Day or even September 11th. I don't think we'd consider that a slap in the face of our country, though.

While we are at it, this is a misleading article written in a way to downplay the fact of pimpage and prostitution in multiple counts.

    Pathetic journalism.

Well, I don't think we'd consider prostitution happening on the 4th of July to be a slap in the face of our country.

I read the article, but the fact that these people were convicted of prostitution doesn't necessarily mean to me that they were engaged in prostitution. If this was put together as a tour to China that, for a certain set price, included travel, hotel, the parties and whatnot with an expectation that sex would happen but with no direct payments for sex, it would be hard to prove that there was actual prostitution going on.

But if all the women were paid directly to have sex with the men, or vice versa, I suppose, then there's prostitution.

I guess my skepticism comes from the fact that charges are often trumped up in legal proceedings. But I was just responding to the idea that this was a slap in the face to the Chinese. That point is the same whether this was prostitution or an orgy or whatever.

The comment about the sex toy party was in reference to the Cleburne (Texas) woman who was arrested for hosting a sex toy party. There's a thread on it here in the forum.

Please help us uncover the truth on how many Iraqis died in the war? How were they buried? How much compensation their families have been received? The point is, why should anyone that makes comments against biased journalism or misinterpretation being asked to provide details?

As an aside, the Chinese government has issued the red warrant for three Japanese suspects through the international police to the Japanese law enforcement department. It's getting international. I don't think it would do so without evidence. The case isn't over.

the strange thing is that the person got life for pimping.

or even less, for providing accommodation for prostitution.

or even less than that, for being an accomplice to someone who provided accommodation for prostitution.

if china lets the precedent set by this case stand, then theoretically, just about every major hotel in every major chinese city ought to be shut down and their operators thrown in jail. god forbid! gonna be lots of disappointed tourists! :D

    Lil:

Do you remember the incident after the last world cup in which the Senegal national team visited Taiwan, called girls in their hotel for group sex, and reports flew around that the Taiwan government paid for their expenses for the "dipmatic support" from Senegal?
