Just rumors but I remember a couple of people on board wanted to trade Lidge last season for all the blown saves.. link The Red Sox met with the Houston Astros yesterday, and it was believed that obtaining relief help via a trade was high on their agenda. Houston closer Brad Lidge, as well as relievers Brad Qualls and Dan Wheeler, are three names the Red Sox have asked about, according to a baseball source. Right fielder Wily Mo Pena is one player the Sox have said is available. The Astros, who yesterday hired ex-Sox pitching coach Dave Wallace to serve in the same role in Houston, are intrigued by Pena but it would take more than that to land Lidge.
Lidge had a rough year last year, but I am not completely giving up on him. I've got hope that he can right himself over the offseason after getting some rest and clearing his head. I'd be willing to deal him, but its gonna take more than Willy Mo, and I don't see the Red Sox giving up what it would take. Oh and who is "Brad" Qualls?
I'm not opposed to trading Lidge, but I am pretty sure "Brad" Qualls will not make the Astros squad next season.
That rumor can be created for (most likely) every team in the league. Everyone needs relief help and if they talk to the Astros, they will inquire about the availability and cost of Lidge, Wheeler and Qualls.
Lidge's value is still high this off-season despite him pitching bad this past season. There are really no closers on the market and every pitching coach in the league thinks they could turn Lidge around. Wily Mo is good but I think you could get a lot more. I doubt Purpura would have interest in Pena because he strikeouts a ton and that’s the reason Purpura has no interest in Adam Dunn. Also, Pena's baseball instincts are horrible something Purpura puts a big emphasis on.
Worthless thread. Unsubstantiated, ridiculous hogwash by people hoping that we trade Lidge. Hey, I read a rumor some guy wrote on a board somewhere about this possible deal the Astros are discussing with the Yankees for Arod. Also we are in talks to acquire Carl Crawford & David Ortiz in a three way trade involving Roy Oswalt, Roger Clemens, and a case of Lone Star beer.
If it's a worthless thread then why bother posting? A rumor is just that this point of the season. But I would rather be reading rumors right now instead of day after day of nothing to reat at all.
There have been quite alot of reported rumors thus far in the offseason. I haven't seen a new thread for every single ridiculous rumor that springs forth. This should have gone in the offseason thead. And also, i'd like to add, that anyone that wants Lidge traded is a fool.
i'm not sure lidge is untouchable. but i sure would want more than willy mo pena. and if i couldn't get more than that, i'd keep him.
He's a cloning experiment that was undertaken by Rice U. geneticists to create a closer who could also be his own set up man.
Uh, no deal...Allso, did you see where the red sox bid on that japanese player...just to negotiate is $51MM...crazy...of course if they don't do a deal they don't have to pay, but if they do, its' salary plus $51MM...
i think it's a bad idea to trade Lidge, he just had an off yr...i mean, he did have alot of saves.... i think it was a pretty bad year for all closers....if u look at the stats, i think this yr, there were alot of blown saves.... WMP would be nice, but where do u really play him....i think Luke Scott has finally established himself in one of the corner spots, willy T is penciled in center...so only leaves one corner outfield left and if we resign Huff, there really isn't room...b/c Burke will playing outthere also.... and if Ensberg has a comeback yr, there won't be playing time at 3rd or 1st for Lamb and he'll be playing out there also....
man, with your offseason plan...we're just gonna re-sign the entire team and have the same offense! (I don't think we're keeping Luke, Willy, Huff, Ensberg, Lamb, Berkman with 5 of those 6 starting)
Typical of the info writers get from unnamed "baseball sources" this time of year: HOUSTON -- The news that the Astros met with the Red Sox on Tuesday came as a surprise to Tim Purpura, who was caught off guard by a newspaper report that indicated the two clubs convened at the general managers meetings in Naples, Fla. No such meeting took place, according to Purpura, who saw Red Sox GM Theo Epstein once -- on the bus that took the GMs to a bowling outing after the first day of meetings. By all accounts, the two did not progress past "hello." http://houston.astros.mlb.com/NASAp...t_id=1741343&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou Interesting tidbit: While the Astros have made no secret of the fact that they're actively pursuing some of the bigger names on the free agent market, Purpura was pleased to discover that those players have a mutual interest in Houston, too. Community support, comfortable playing conditions and the club's winning tradition appear to be big selling points. "I had a meeting [Tuesday] with the agent of a top free agent," Purpura said. "The player said he really likes how fans support the players in Houston. It's not the kind of thing you would usually bring up. They talk about the roof, how loud it is when it's closed. There seems to be a great deal of interest in our situation, largely because we have a winning club."
