I know JVG is just itching to make another trade, but he needs to keep in mind that without keeping our 1st rounders, we will continue picking from the bottom of the pool. With our owner refusing to go over the cap, and there's nothing wrong with that, we cannot continue to include(give) our 1st rounders in these meaningless trades and expect to compete at a high level. We have garbage type players filling out half the roster. Our team is considered the oldest in the NBA. In two to three years JJ, Ward, Tumbo, Weatherspoon, and Howard will be too slow to have any significant roles on our team, and Sura will follow within the next two years. Since we didn't pick up Boki's option, he might be gone next year. T-mac is great and all, but unless you don't mind him pairing up with Lue and Gaines, we'll need to bring in some fresh talent to inject into this backcourt. Barrett was a nice reminder of that the other day. We, as fans, need new talent to be excited about and watch develop, not to mention easily afford. This upcoming Draft will be very deep, and unless we keep our pick(s), we'll be missing a golden opportunity for the third straigh year.
Why draft someone when JVG is not going to give him a chance to play and develop and just bench him when he makes his first mistake.... See --> Boki for an example...and any other young player he has had in his possesion. He will probably trade it for another 30 + player.
there is no way we trade our pick this year if we continue to look like we will miss the playoffs. also, i don't think that we are allowed to trade it this year.
Yeah right. From the draft history of Rox, it is better for the Rox to trade away the first rounder. Otherwise, do you want to draft another EG or Boki?
On a night in which our starting PF/C combo combined for TWO defensive rebounds, and shot 4-17 against a pretty soft interior, putting this on Boki (who was the leading scorer off the bench) is hard. Sorry he's only shooting 50% from 3 point land for the season, after tonight's misses.
Keeping in mind that the 1st round pick is a guaranteed contract, you are locked in financially with the pick. I would rather we had 2 second round picks than one 1st round. We are a very old team now, but every season there will be changes. Looking at the roster from 2000-2001 season - only one player from that team remains a Rocket - Maurice Taylor. Do not worry about the team makeup now except for the Max player - T-Mac and the other soon to be Max player Yao Ming- all other players will float and move. Everything will be in constant flux. This is a poor horse trading team. Van Gundy is in large part responsible for signing these old players- I personally do not like it - watch Mutombo run out of steam in March.
Nikestrad, I wasn't blaming Boki for the loss, but your points are well-taken. I've heard that this draft class actually sucks hard. I'd like to keep our pick, and while I think we should be able to land a decent role-player even with a late first-rounder, whoever we draft is unlikely to be a difference maker.
If we could parlay that 1st rounder into a young powerfoward....im all for it. We need particulary mobile, non black hole on the defensive end that will get a rebound and block or 2. Stromile Swift - Took the qualifying offer from the Grizzlies, will be a UFA after the year, Grizz might look to get something instead of losing him for nothing. Chris Wilcox - Playing out of position at center due to Kamans injuries. Kaman is back, will soon be back on the pine backing up Brand. Tyson Chandler - Is being shopped right now. Kwame Brown - Injured right now, when he returns.....will find a spot for him on the bench. Will be playing behind Jamison at the power foward position Nene - Not happy coming off the bench in Denver. Rumors of him being shipped off. Samuel Dalembert - In the coaches doghouse, comming off the bench.
i didnt think we had traded any picks passed the last draft. i was under the assumption that in the Glen Rice trade, we gave up a 1st rounder, the chicago picks and traded places in the 2nd round.
elephant, those are all desirable big men, and we pretty much have nothing that would entice anyone to trade us those guys. A late first-rounder certainly isn't going to do it. Here's what Coon says about trading first-rounders. The consecutive pick restriction only applies to future picks. http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#70 "...teams are restricted from trading away future first round draft picks in consecutive years. This is called the "Ted Stepien Rule." Stepien owned the Cavs from 1980-83, and made a series of bad trades that cost the Cavs several years' first round picks. The trades, as columnist Chris Young put it, "amounted to giving up Manhattan for a bag of beads." As a result of Stepien's ineptitude, teams are now prevented from making trades which might leave them without a future first-round draft pick in consecutive years. This rule applies only to future first round picks. For example, if this is the 99-00 season, then teams can trade their 2000 first round pick without regard to whether they had a 1999 pick, since their 1999 pick is no longer a future pick. But they can't trade away both their 2000 and 2001 picks, since both are future picks. Teams sometimes work around this rule by trading first round picks in alternate years. In addition, teams are required to have only a first round pick, and not necessarily their first round pick. So teams may trade away their own future picks in consecutive years if they have another team's first round pick in one of those years."
The next NBA draft is expected to be quite deep. As a result of the rumored 20 years age limit Commissioner Stern is pushing for, as many as 10 high schoolers and many teenage Europeans are looking to declare for next summer. If we draft well we could land 1 or 2 special players (at least I hope).
Looks as if Barrett and Boki have been difference makers these last few games... TBar- Although they are guarranteed contracts, they can have team options on the third or forth year. And they are usually fairly reasonable(~>1mill/year). Compared to what we are paying Ward, Weatherspoon, Mo, Dike; noone should complain about paying the salary on a mid first rounder. What will be sad is if Boki plays well all season, since we didn't pick up his option, he might be able to ask three times what we would have had to pay him. Now that's tough.
