I talked to Fatty. While driving, Fatty's laptop fell onto the floorboard and a 12-ounce Coke spilled onto the computer, which is why he's been absent as of late.

Now, not all of the Coke went inside the computer, but apparently enough went in because his laptop refuses to cooperate any longer. It doesn't turn on....no lights, no charging light, no nuthin'. The computer is essentially a very expensive door-stop.

I didn't know what the hell to tell him, so I told him I'd put it up on the board and let you guys tell him through me.

What's the deal? Can anything be done or is he screwed?

    Thanks for the reply, Drew.

So if he is, in fact, screwed, is there any way he can recover the information he has on that computer's hard drive?

Put the hard drive in another computer... if the company that built it can't fix it without charging him that is.
Apple's charges for "liquids" spilled on a computer were punitively expensive, almost as much as a new computer in most cases, and they were NEVER covered under warranty.
People would send them in and say stuff like "it just stopped working..." The repair shop would put notes that said:
MLB (Main Logic Board) covered in dried, sticky, liquid. Appears to be Diet Coca Cola."
I remember reading that to a lady on the phine and then having to put her on mute before I cracked up laughing. How the hell did they know it is DIET Coke?

Agreed, it is fixable. It will require a tech to take it apart and clean the goo off the mainboards, and other components.

Also, if it comes down to the worst-case scenario...take out the hard drive and get a converter for the drive interface...easily found online....and hook it up to a different computer and copy the drive contents to an empty drive/folder.

I had a Dell laptop and did the same thing with a glass of Coke.

    Well, Diet Coke.

With Jack Daniels in it, but that's besides the point.

They didn't send me a new one. And I still had 1300 bucks left to pay on it.
