Of Gods and Men traces the true story of Trappist monks who are attacked by Islamic extremists.

It is a tale of peaceful coexistence between Christianity and Islam, shattered by the external forces of extremism.

Here is a letter written by the head of the Trappist monks, to be read on the occurrence of his death.

Both Abrahamic religions have their ugly points...and their beauty. They are inextricably linked to one another.

Though the Quran notes in the Surat Al-Baqarah (2:120)...

it also notes in the Surat 'Āli Imrān (3:84)

To examine the ugliness of one is to examine the ugliness of the other.

And yes, before some go on a tangent about the lack of Christian extremists, I bring to attention the Army of God, the Lord's Resistance Army, the National Liberation Front of Tripura etc.

However, even as an avowed atheist, I believe both religions still have things of beauty to offer the world.

So, this is (hopefully) the beginning of a reasoned discussion about religion, and the possible provenance of extremism in all of its' forms, as well as to what value religion may still offer despite these warts. Of course, I am not naive. It is likely this thread, if it starts at all, will degenerate into a fistfight between certain members of the forum who already have more or less set viewpoints. Hopefully, however, we can all be reasonably civil while addressing these points.

Never had the pleasure of trying one.

but cue one more onto my list of why Trappists are awesome.

(please no one tell me they have a dark history of enslaving entire peoples or something)

    A shame.

    I recommend the movie though...

    Here's a better trailer anyways. Hopefully it's US-worthy.
