I can't believe how much snow is falling in Austin and San Antoino tonight. Dallas right now is under a winter weather storm advisery with snow fall amounts expected to reach anywhere from 3 to 6 inches. I really hope it makes it this way this morning. (Houston) I can't remmember the last time this town got any signifacant amount of snow fall. Let It Snow!
The last time I remember snow in H-town was when I was a freshmen in high school... and I'm 25 now, so good god it was the middle of the first 93-94 season. How fitting, hell froze over. LOL!
It is really coming down here in Round Rock right now. It's been snowing for at least 30 to 45 minutes now, and we got some earlier today as well before lunch. I'm hoping that this sticks enough to take pics in the morning. Yeah, I know it's not a huge deal to those people who live in cold ass environs, but this is such a huge deal to people who see a piddly amount no more than once a year....especially the kids. Besides, I want to pelt someone with a snowball!
LOL! It's also weird that it's the anniversary of 'The Glide" and the Rockets. The Basketball Gods might actually be looking down on Houston once again. Awesome, please let it snow. Go Rockets!!
We've had snow, sleet, and a little bit of ice during the past 48 hours. Tonight, while driving home, it's snowing, about 20 degrees and these dumbasses in Lubbock are driving 30, 40 miles per hour. Granted, I grew up in Houston and overall have little experience in snow conditions, but come on you have to realize that ice is either on the road or forming. Lubbock is not that big, you can slow down...... Supposedly, the ice will be gone around noon later today, and Lubbock will return to "cold" weather and no precipitation.
I know what you mean. The snow shouldn't be that big of a deal to me either seeing I spent all of my childhood growing up in Valporasio, Indiana. Heck, I've even lived in Bosie, Idaho for a while and spent alot of time during the winter seasons in Sun Valley, Bogas Bason, and Sawtooth mountins. So I'd say that I'm quite familar with heavy amounts of snow. But nothing feels more special than when it snows in Houston.
man i came out of HEB (in austin) and it was sleeting and i figured that would be as good as it got, but then my roommate came home an hour later and said it was snowing and sure enough it was. actual, real snow coming down in flakes and sticking on the ground. i just went out in a t-shirt i was so excited (and didn't feel that cold). people were throwing snowballs (and they were damn hard, luckily none hit me) and it was just cool to see it come down like that. i can't remember the last time i've seen real snow like this. it sleeted pretty good last year, but before that it had to be early 90's. it might be the same time Svpernaut is talking about, but i don't remember snow that didn't melt that time. the last real snow in texas i remember is 1989 when it snowed right before christmas and there was still a tiny little bit left on the ground christmas morning. i remember the day it snowed the low was 9 and the high was 18. hopefully it snows for a little longer here. if this was high school i'd be hoping for school cancellation. as it is, i don't go to classes anymore so that's not a big deal. hell, i'd actually be mad if i didn't get to go to weight training on monday.
It's not looking good for of us down here in Houston. It looks as if the snow is starting to move northward towards Dallas. Where it hasn't snowed sence Feb.24 2003.
We had several feet of snow in Amarillo just a couple of years ago. That was one of the reasons I made my way south where the snow is far less frequent. When I was a kid (also in Amarillo), we had a series of extremely harsh winters for two or three years in a row. We'd end up with twelve foot drifts and snowfall on the ground up to our waists at times (I was smaller then, of course. It wasn't up to an adult's waist). And there was apparently only one snowplow in town, so it took a while to get dug out. You'd see 4x4 Waggoneers and Suburbans all stuck in the snow on some of the roads. It only came a few years, though. By the end of the 1980s, Amarillo still got regular snowfall, but it was never really all that harsh (other than the relatively harsh winter of 1992 when blowing snow and low visibility ended up causing a 100-car pileup on I-40, but I lived in Fort Worth that year, so I missed it)... until Christmastime of 2000 when Amarillo received the highest snowfall that had ever been recorded there. This snow that's coming down here in Plano tonight isn't all that problematic. It comes down and then pretty well immediately melts. The problem being that everyone forgets how to drive once the snow starts coming down, but it's not too big a deal. Given the choice, though, I'd much rather live someplace that never got snow. I've seen enough of it for one lifetime. I can't imagine how those people in places like Michigan or Minnesota, etc. can stand it (I lived in Connecticut for a year, but it didn't snow all that much. And the state was good about getting the roads cleared up there).
Anything but this constant cold rain would make me happy. This weather is way to friggin' depressing...
I know what you mean, can you say Seattle? I want some real winter percipatation around here dag gummet.
For real, I'm not used to driving in the snow being from houston. So I've driven very little the last two nights but I did tonight. I was going about 15 and I saw the same dumbasses just completely ignoring the dangerous roads. Unbelievable. I hate to think of the accidents that are going to occur. add a friday night + lubbocks drunken drivers + snow. Its pretty scary when you think about it.
Haven't you guys heard of tire chains? I know you won't need them that often, but they should help you get to where you need to be.
i guess i should've added "that i've seen" to that comment b/c i've only been in austin and houston (and austin only the last 3.5 years). i don't really know where i stand in terms of getting snow. i don't really like living where snow seems like a mythical substance (i.e. houston) but i don't think i could stand getting snowed in repeatedly each year. plus, when it gets cold like that you can't play football or basketball outside. but since i like houston and austin i guess i'll just have to live with it.
well since it nevers snows i guess i wouldn't know. i just know when it gets down in the 30's, anything where your hands have to be in the open makes them hurt like hell, and catching a football just makes it worse. especially someone like me who bites their nails, skin gets hard in the cold and eventually it gets split open. even if i wanted to play in the snow, i doubt i could get my friends to. perhaps i'll have to try it. now basketball, anything under 50 and your fingers stop being able to move and then you can't dribble or shoot and it just stops being fun, even if it's not that cold to the rest of your body. if i had it my way, it would be 55 degrees year round. cold like i like it, but not too cold.
