Okay, here is the deal. I want to do a fundraiser for my youth basketball team, and I am thinking about holding a Texas Holdem tournament. Now I know gambling is illegal in a public place, but you can gamble in a private residence legally. Here is what I was thinking about doing; I was going to try and hold my event at a public Sports Bar (Sports Bar will let us hold event for free, they will profit off food and drinks), Charge $20 per entry, and prizes would not be cash, but gift certificates, and/or prizes, like ipod shuffle. I think since the pot is not a cash pot, it would not be illegal. Just like when you pay to enter at satellite tournaments around town, you do not win cash but an entry to the real tournament where you do. I really need help to know what I can do to make this sqeaky clean and legal, so I can counter all the parents questions when I present this idea to them this weekend. All entrie fees will go to our basketball team to provide fee's for uniforms, tournament entries, equipment etc. Thanks for the input!
