just got a letter from the police... "...being prosecuted before the courts where they are either diverted or convicted..." what's diverted mean? english is my 2nd language. i looked it up in the dictionary but can't make sense of it. thanks.
Diverted basically means initially appearing before a court, then agreeing to some kinda of deal like community service or such. You then go out and complete that deal or contract and the charges are then dropped or withdrawn. That was the basic gist of it when I worked in NY and then DC.
In Texas, we call that deferred adjudication. It's like probation, where you have to pay a fine, stay out of trouble, etc. After a certain time period, if you don't violate the terms of your agreement with the court, your case is dismissed. If you violate your terms, the judge can punish you to the full extent of the law.
