So Im driving in from Austin, and I have to go to Intercontinental to pick my pops up from the Airport. As we are driving away from IAH, I notice the lovely profile of Houston's mayor: Lee Brown. Since when do we feel the need to put the mayor's face on a huge billboard for all to see?? Ive never seen that before in my life (and I have been to quite a few airports). Is your mayor that big on himself???? ------------------ I stole your money and I did your daughter at Texas A&M University

i just flew back into houston over the weekend and i saw that billboard too. i said what the f***? but i guess i am not surprised, cuz yes, he is that big on himself. of course he is a high profile politician, big egos come with the territory. kinda like being a basketball player. ------------------
SO THAT'S WHERE THE CITY'S MISSING $2 MILLION WENT!!! ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
When is he up for re-election? Ive heard that he has been a big pain in the ass, and hasnt really done much for the city...only for himself. Is this true?? ------------------ I stole your money and I did your daughter at Texas A&M University
Lee was a big supporter of the Rockets new arena and he's the most gay-friendly mayor the city has ever had. that's enough to get my vote. ------------------
I haven't been living here for but one year of his tenure as Mayor, but I've heard only bad things about him. He came to speak at my HS, and I really liked his speech though (I started a standing ovation for him ). However, I know the city has really had some problems -- money has gone missing, and infrastructure has taken a real hit. The water pipe problem last year was really badly handled. ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
Missing money???? He must be really crooked. ------------------ I stole your money and I did your daughter at Texas A&M University
He could have at least got some dental work on that giant gap in his grill before he put his face on a gigantic billboard... Good luck! Deltar ------------------ "Minute after minute, hour after hour, the proud and strong knight struggled in vain against the wasp inside his armour."
I'm surprised Sheila Jackson Lee isn't right beside him. You know what they say? i think overall houston is doing better than it was 5 years ago. i lived here 1994-95 (not a bad time to be in htown, eh?) and the city just wasn't as cool back then (i moved back at the end of '99 and have been here since). maybe it's all about my financial situation, interests changing, etc., but even my parents, when they come to visit remark about much nicer houston is now. does this have anything to do with lee brown? who the hell knows. but at least the towns not a total sh*thole under his watch... ------------------
Yeah but does there have to be 45 300 foot bilboard on every freakin highway??? And strip malls at every corner??? Whoever said no zoning is a good idea for Houston should be shot. ------------------ I stole your money and I did your daughter at Texas A&M University
I know zoning has been voted on numerous times and it fails repeatedly. I don't know why. I guess it's too late now, but when we moved here in 93, there was an awful lot of talk about it, and there was some discussion for a few years afterwards, but all I've heard lately is how people wish we had it. If you don't like zoning, visit Kansas City. Then you'll realize how great it is. Everything in KC is so nicely zoned and so well organized, it's a joy to be there. Then go to SA where there's no zoning. It's a mess of disorganization, roads that lead nowhere, businesses in the middle of housing developments, houses next to freeways and next to major businesses -- it's really a disaster. Although I still love SA anyhow. But the Spurs suck! ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
It's a long read, but it gives a counter-argument to all y'all wanting zoning. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/Forum7/HTML/004357.html
Zoning sucks! You would never have the charm of an area like West Univ (with surrounding shopping) or the Museum District, etc etc with zoning. I visit friends in their little neighborhoods in Dallas. Everything is neatly arranged and it all looks the same! Blah!! They have to drive 20 minutes to get to the nearest grocery store and/or fast food establishment. No thanks! At this point, the genie is out of the bottle. If the zoning thing in houston bothers you, there is but one solution...MOVE! Now..I'm not against some restrictions on outdoor advertisements..particularly height related. But I understand that they are already in place, and that when those signs start to come down, they can't go back up. ------------------
You mean Kathy Whitmire comes in second??? ...and what about Louie Welch? He had a great anti-aids plan... (Please note: The above italicized comment is dripping with sarcasm.) ------------------ It looks like a veteran can Be had.
