I'm not sure if you guys picked up the Sports Illustrated article on Lee Benson. He's a 6'9" forward who spent the last 8 yrs in prison. Anyway, he was recruited before going to jail and was merely a post up player. While in jail, he developed an outside shot as slamming the ball could get you hurt in jail. He's out of jail and playing for a small juco in the South. He's being looked at to possibly enter the draft. He's been a model citizen since leaving prison. I think he may be a great 2nd round pick up. The only down I see is that he's already 28 yrs old. Have you guys heard anything more about him?
What did he do to get sent to jail for 8 years? Armed Robbery? I remember in one of my fantasy football drafts when someone drafted Brian Blades (or some name similar) who had been sent to prison in the offseason. I ,then on the few picks later, drafted a gut by the name of Mathis who had went from the inept Jet's offense to Atlanta's stat oriented offense. Offtopic, but oh well.
The police were called and Benson was quickly arrested, charged and later convicted of abduction with a firearm, drug trafficking and failure to comply with authorities. http://cbs.sportsline.com/b/page/pressbox/0,1328,4653874,00.html
I think he's worth a shot.....he could be a late first rounder to second selection. What do you guys think?
Well, the Rockets scouted him. If his past becomes an issue, and it likely will, he may drop into the Rockets lap in the second round. HBO special Rockets scout Brent Johnson was flipping through the late-night channels when he stopped on HBO at the sight of a familiar face -- his. HBO's Real Sports series has included a segment about 28-year-old junior college prospect Lee Benson, a former convict who served six years for drug trafficking before beginning a basketball career at Brown Mackie (Kansas) Community College. When referring to the NBA scouts that have made the trip to Salina, Kan., to see Benson, the camera stopped on Johnson in the stands. "I looked up at the television and said, `Hey, that's me,' " Johnson said. "I had no idea they were doing that." Johnson said that besides issues about Benson's past, that Benson's lack of experience and top-flight competition makes him an unusually unproven prospect. "He's pretty talented, but very raw," Johnson said. "He was incarcerated for six years. You can tell he has not played a lot of organized ball. Playing against junior college people, he makes it look real easy. He's impressive. ... "
