I just realized that T-Mac's contract ends after the 2010 season as does LeBron's, Wade's, and Bosh's. At that point we will have around 20-25 mil in cap space making it very feasable to make a run at any of these guys. Now I think we have a shot to win now, but a 25 year old LBJ in Rocket red next to Yao at 29 entering his prime makes me want to cry.

and they would opt out because...one won a championship..one is going to the championship..ones team is developing. no reason for them to leave..

i could see lebron leaving, he said he wants to be the first athlete billionaire, and in his nike contract, he recieves more money if he goes to a city like new york. dwane and bosh, anything can happen in few years. ya, but for most part, i doubt anyone of them will opt out, especialy to houston

I'm starting to think Wade is going to be a 50 game a year player in three years. His body is already breaking down.

The salary cap doesn't work like that though. We are way over the cap. Eliminating T-Mac's contract and assuming all things remain the same, would get us nowhere close to the 15+ million under the cap needed to sign any of those guys outright. In fact, very few teams ever get that much cap space so generally superstar players just re-sign with the team they are on. (unless a sign and trade is worked out)

Also, superstar players can get higher max contracts with the team they were playing for than a new team that signs them. So there's a monetary incentive to stick with the team you're on or work out a sign and trade.

Wade is leaving because Shaq's contract ends at the same time, and is going to retire. Wade is not going to play on a Shaqless Heat team, and hopefully he wants to team up with another big man. But we don't know what Portland's cap situation would be. If they have cap space, Oden could be more attractive than Yao considering he is younger.

Ive said it a million times. If the Rockets could start Vince Young, Vspan, Dan Langhi, and 2 street bums the entire BBS would cream itself. Get Mario Elie or Chuck Norris to coach and its over.

there is a reason all of them WILL opt out in 3 years:

part of the last CBA negotiations had the players union asking for a raised salary cap, and a raised max contract. the nba wanted to raise the age limit for the draft. both sides met in the middle. the nba got the age raised one year, the players got a slight raise.

in 3 years when this CBA runs out, the negotiations for the new one will center around these 2 topics. most likely, both sides will meet in the middle again to raise the draft age another year and give the palyers a higher max contract.

now if you were sure you were worth the max, why wouldn't you opt out and earn a higher max? the future of FA signings will center around the contract length of the CBA. max contract players (or those who think they are) will allways have an player option in the same year the new CBA goes into effect.

with that said, can we land any of these guys? well in 3 years we better be a championship level team, if not won one already. if any of thier teams become unsuccessfull then any of these stars may feel like leaving. a S$T offer of tmac + some young players and picks might be good enough to land one of them.

then again, these teams are being run very well and shouldn't lose thier stars desire to play for them in 3 seasons.

Unless you think we're playing the 09/10 season with only 5 guys, or 5 guys plus 7 others on 1-yr deals, that's not going to happen. Don't bother trying to use cap figures this far in advance - we'll be signing people with all/part the MLE every summer until then.
