I've been watching some Lebron highlights lately and it seems to me that he travels a lot when he drives to the basket. I haven't slo-mo'd it and counted myself but just from watching it in real time it looks like he sometimes takes as many as five steps after having stopped dribbling. I know this has come up in the past before but I've never heard him getting any sort warning or anything. He just laughs it off as his crab dribble. I reckon I could score 20ppg myself if I was allowed to ignore certain rules like the requirement to dribble the ball. The kid's got amazing ability but I really hate it when he gets away with this sort of stuff so regularly. In general, I'm really not a fan of the refs letting so many things go (traveling, carrying...etc) for the sake of highlights.
In the paint, officials will let a few travelling calls go because of all the constant bumping and pushing in there...
It isn't just superstars that get away with traveling in the paint. All wing players get away with it. That's just the way it's (not) called in the NBA.
For post up players, if you shuffle your feet, it's traveling. For slashing wing players, you can run with the ball for as many steps as you want, and it's a spectacular play on sportscenter. It just shows you what kind of basketball the NBA wants to sell.
Superstars rarely get called for traveling, and I've also noticed that most guys on fast breaks travel but aren't called for it.
Players travel even right when they RECEIVE the ball before even on a standstill before making a move
You get it. Besides post players, NBA refs are not allowing players to shuffle their feet when faking jumpshots or when making their initial move toward the basket. I'm probably in the minority, but I don't think stars don't get much preferential treatment on traveling. I think refs are somewhat locked into how they call traveling and are fairly objective with it. Foul calls are a different story because (1) they are much harder to call as the circumstances are so variable, (2) subject to whining, screaming & flopping (3) all of which induce more subjectivity. I can live with the way traveling is handled. Flopping is a bigger problem IMO. Another pet issue with me is technical fouls should count as personal fouls to help muzzle idiots like Rasheed Wallace, Kendrick Perkins, Kobe, Nate Robinson, etc. [/End of rant]
At least five steps here. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ABc5wju8eEM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ABc5wju8eEM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
If traveling were called correctly, and if refs swallow their whistles when the offensive player initiates contact for the sake of contact, I'd imagine basketball would go back to the old days of medium jumpers. But alas, the game has turned into 3 point shooting and dunks. With nothing in between. Is it really such a bad thing to see some 10-15 foot jumpers? Would the fans really stop watching if refs officiated correctly?
Maybe it's the Cavs whole team? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nzpQnY5NKIA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nzpQnY5NKIA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
This one is a bit hard to tell if he dribbled one more time but it looks like 5 steps lol <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Qf8WbzBoax8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Qf8WbzBoax8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> Here's even more fun <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/S8tuy-9qLPc&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/S8tuy-9qLPc&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Don't post this. Only superstars are supposed to get away with traveling like this. Seriously though, amazing.
