He's doing this to smoothen his transition to Houston. He won't be able to wear the #23 due to Calvin Murphy.
He definitely seemed very certain about it. Probably a business decision to sell more jerseys, but if he went to another team next year he'd have a new one anyway...so this is obviously a sign that he's re-signing with Cleveland. You heard it here first.
He's honoring a dbag like Jordan by not using 23 and instead taking this guy's number? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Russell
Im not really that big on players wearing the number of their favorite player. Get your own number and make that your own. Thinking every player should give up number 23 for Jordan, its a bit stupid really. The way people go on about him you'd think he scored 50 points in every game, won 11 NBA titles, average a triple double over a season and choked out PJ Carlesimo.
Makes sense for him. #23 is identified with MJ. As good as Lebron might get, #23 is still Jordan. If he wants to be identified with a number like Jordan is, if he wants for the whole league to retire his number after he retires like he's suggesting for Jordan, then he can't be #23; he has to do it with his own number.
This seems to be the new trend in the NBA - change your number after a few years. Kobe, Amare, McGrady, and now Lebron. Who cares? It's just a number.
Should we be looking to retire all the numbers of all the Greats Magic Johnson . . .Larry Bird. . . Dr J!! soon no numbers will be left If he wants to change his number .. . he should just do it and be done with it Rocket River
