CLEVELAND (AP) -- LeBron James acknowledged driving 101 mph on the highway on his 23rd birthday, and gave no assurance he wouldn't go that fast again.

The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar was ticketed by the State Highway Patrol on Interstate 71 in suburban Medina at nearly 3 a.m. on Dec. 30. He was driving in a 65 mph zone, and the patrol said it's the first time James was ticketed.

"I was doing 101," James said Monday after practice. "That's it. I was speeding. I've just got to abide by the law. I got caught. It happens."

Lawyer Colin Jennings filed a not guilty plea for James in Medina Municipal Court. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 11, when the Cavaliers play in Orlando.

When James was asked if he will continue traveling at such speed, he said: "I don't know, maybe at times. It's not a big deal to me. You've just got to abide by the rules that's all. I made a mistake and I'll live with it."

James said he was heading home after the team arrived in Cleveland from New Orleans, where they had lost to the Hornets a few hours earlier.

"I'm not going to jail or nothing like that," he said. "I wasn't drunk. I was just speeding. That's it."

    --------------
I'd be PO'ed if I was Cavaliers management. Driving that recklessly (you shouldn't be driving that fast anyways) in the wee hours of the morning?

Don't you automatically get arrested after you go over a certain limit?

I hope he learns to slow down. It would be a shame if he were to repeat the mistakes of Bobby Phills. It would be even worse if he killed somebody else like JR Smith.

100 mph isn't that bad. if you are driving like a jackass and weaving in and out of traffic going 100 then that's different. but if he was cruising on the open freeway going 100 then who cares.

Yeah I saw this on ESPN.com..but what the hell? He said
Wow, too arrogant to admit his own mistake or does he think he's above the law? That's outrageous.

And yeah...most states 101mph would be classified as wreckless or driving with intent to kill or something and you get some jailtime. Love how he isn't getting crap.

Jay Williams was a motorcycle accident.. huge difference.. the injury risk isn't even comparable.

Let's not go overboard... even with the *ability* to send someone to jail for going over X miles per hour, it certainly doesn't happen all the time. When I was taking a defensive driving class after getting a speeding ticket (75/55 if you're wondering at this point), there were multiple guys in there who had been caught going 101, 115, 120...some spent the night in jail, some didn't. (some didn't even with a prior record) It all depends on the cop, his mood at the time, your record, your demeanor, etc..

I'm sure Lebron was helped by his status, but a lot of randoms get outta that without jailtime, too (and plenty of those guys have contested and somehow gotten the charges dropped more often than not..I don't get it)

Arrogance? Stop acting like hes the only person to drive over 100 mph, a lot of people drive that fast and they do get caught for it. Not everyone who drives fast is arrogant or believes hes above the law. He isn't getting crap because it really isn't a big deal, any average joe could get off as lightly as he did, its only a big deal to the media and people who hold him above the average person(I don't). I'm not a Lebron fan and I'm not 100% sure, but Ohio doesn't have a limit for wreckless driving.

I tend to agree with the premise that driving 100 mph isn't *that* big of a risk, given the right road/traffic circumstances and that you're a responsible driver.

That said, what Lebron's saying is still wrong. Especially coming from someone who is a role model.

You guys need to get off your high horses; I'm sure you guys never have sped on a freeway, especially with empty roads.

how did you get "speeding" = "arrogance" outta that? He was referring to what Lebron said ("its not a bit deal, and that he may do it again") was arrogant.

Practically everyone go over the limit once in awhile , but to go over by that much and then say "its not a big deal, he just speeding, and he might do it again" is kinda reckless/arrogant.

So no body here ever hit 100 mph ever? Also, let's just say you even got ticketed for it, would you definitively say that you wouldn't do it again?
