Yes, this is slightly a self-serving thread. Next question? Anyway, it’s been a privilege meeting a lot of you folks in person at various BBS get-togethers as well as the games and game-watching parties we’ve had over the years. But, I’m packing tonight to leave for grad school at Missouri this week, so for the first time, I’m moving away from Texas and the greater Houston area. And I can already tell it’s going to be a rough adjustment… every other restaurant isn't Tex-Mex, for one. Anyway, just wanted to tell all the folks I’ve met through this board that it’s been a blast. Of course I’ll still be on the board as much as ever, but it’ll be a lot more difficult to go to BW3 and play softball and basketball and all the other fun things we’ve gotten to do over the years. But, y’all can still see me on TV when I hop over to St. Louis to watch the Astros and Cards in the NLCS (yeah that’s right I said it… might be 2007, but I said it, haha). Also, on that subject, if there are any CF.net members in Missouri, speak up… I’m definitely looking for some ‘Stros fans to go to the games at the new Busch with. We’ll open up the new Busch in the playoffs the same way we ended the old one. In any event, all the meet-ups with you guys have been a blast, and I can’t wait until next summer and two years from now when I can come back to Texas on a more permanent basis. Bye Houston. So... anyone want to share some stories about their first move away from Texas? Does life still go on? Will I survive? Will there be serious Mexican food withdrawals? Also, thanks in advance for all you guys that do a great job keeping us up to date on the games in chat... I'm going to be relying on you guys a whole lot more this year than I'd like. Of course, all the playoff games will be available, and I'm in the optimistic camp expecting and hoping for there to be a lot of them. We'll see. Anyway, back to packing... just thought I'd take a second to embrace my internet dorkiness and let all the folks I know on here that they're appreciated. Later, guys!
As someone who recently left Texas after living there for 30+ years, I can give you one single piece of advice (even if you are returning at some point in the future)...indulge in as much TexMex as you can. It's truly a unique Texas occurrence and no one anywhere else can do it like Texas does!!! Good luck in school!!!
Sounds like fun, good luck to ya. You'll definitely get homesick, but I found out a long time ago that anytime I leave Houston, I miss it and want to get back asap (unless it's San Francisco, of course ;-); it's just a 'comfort zone' of mine. But what do I know, I am bias: I love Houston, it's home.
expect to see about 90% less hot girls. seriously. Texas spoils you rotten when it comes to females. and food. and everything else. but especially females.
I've seen you at two of the most memorable sporting events in my life. Astros/Braves game 4 last year and before Texas whooping it up against Colorado in the Big XII Championship game. Have fun at Mizzou. I've got relatives and friends in Missouri. There are a lot worse places you could be. Good luck, man.
This will quite possibly be the biggest blow to Pimpin' Dubose. Texas will miss you, very much. And since you totally didn't want to meet me and moestavern when he was here, I guess we'll never meet. Utter gheyness.
Good stuff man- My younger sister just got back from her visits to Northwestern and Mizzou yesterday. She's looking into both for undergradate journalism and really was impressed by the journalism program at Mizzou- supposedly it's one of the top programs in the nation. I keep telling her to come to Texas for journalism but she isn't hearing it. Best of luck at Mizzou.
Good luck. You'll really enjoy grad school -- I'd say my year in grad school was the best year of my life -- it's an opportunity to really focus your studies, and work hard on something you're interested in, while still having the college experience. Just get ready for winter. My brother spent a year at Missouri-Rolla, and he hated the cold more than anything else there. Leaving Texas is hard, IMO. There are lots of small things that you'll miss -- like feeder roads (I've never seen feeder roads outside of Texas), or big parking lots, and new development. You'll anticipate the big things like the lack of food, but there'll be all these little things that you never think about that make the transition more difficult.
i've left twice to places where I've known no one.. and honestly, I think those 2 experiences have helped me a lot. The school atmosphere should help you on the social level at least. Absorb everything out there, meet people.. like they said, the Mexican food is just horrendous outside Texas. You never woulda guessed it.. and the Dos XX doesn't flow as often
Two of my cousins graduated from that school. There is no replacement for Houston but there are fine women everywhere you go.
Having just moved back to Texas, all I have to say is... sucks to be you! j/k Good luck at grad school!
There are only two things that come out of Mizzou, and I don't see any horns on you... You'll do fine...It'll make coming back that much better...When I left Houston for the first time, it was tough, but then you make the best out of the situation and enjoy every minute back... Good Luck...
If you want to blend in with the locals, you have to pronounce it Mizzura. And you warsh your clothes. Oh, and you might want to slip in "that-a-way" and "this-a-way". Congrats, have fun and study hard (it is possible to do both).
