I was shocked that Bill Russell was voted league MVP several times when he was not even on the all NBA first team (Wilt). Someone please explains to me how you can be league MVP when you are not even considered tbe best at your position.
By definition, most valuable player doesn't necessarily equate to "the best player," although when voting, voters look for "the best player." So, umm..I dunno.
Probably has a lot to do with the C's winning in comparison to Wilt's Sixers and Warriors. Pretty interesting tidbit though. Evan
To me, a regular season league MVP = best player in the league, otherwise why don't we have a popularity vote just like the all-star vote?
Up until Nash started having problems with his hammy, many people thought he was the MVP. And I challenge you to find one person who thought he was also the best player. I think that the MVP, to a lot of people, is the player who helps elevate his team to the next level.
Probably has something to do with the fact that MVP is voted for. I'm not certain, but I don't think anyone votes on the all-NBA teams.
He's certainly been the best PG this year, and he'll probably make the All-NBA first team as well. Another Celtics, Dave Cowens also won an MVP without ever making the All-NBA First team (Kareem)
the MVP is not considered the leagues best player. the award goes to the player most valuable to his team. the all nba first team honor goes to the best offensive player at each position (usually). wilt was the best offensive center those years. bill was a great defensive player, and his leadership made him the most valuable to his team.
