developing... BREAKING NEWS Jurors reach verdict in trial of Enron executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling. Verdict to be read at noon ET.
Does anyone really think these 2 guys are going down? My guess is that the jury lets them off because of a lack of evidence. What that really means is that the evidence was above the jury's heads. There was plenty of evidence, the jury probably just didn't understand it.... I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a chance in hell that either one of them are found guilty.
Skilling is facing 275 years if convicted of all crimes and Lay is looking at 45 years. If anyone goes down it might be Skilling and Lay can plead ignorance.
You would be surprised at 1. how well jurors assimilate complex information if presented clearly and 2. how strongly they form opinions about it despite not having any personal interest in the subject matter.
You're probably right. At least I hope so. I've just seen too many cases where it seemed like the jury's main goal was just to go home as soon as possible. Of course, I wasn't in the jury room, so who knows.
They're wealthy, and contributed a lot of money to the Bush Administration and the GOP. They'll get slaps on the wrist and pats on the back and will go back to ruining peoples' lives and living in mansions.
I've seen people on mock juries, who are just there to get paid an extra 100$ on a saturday morning, get into heated arguments about complex reinsurance transactions. It's amazing how seriously people take it.
i've also had jurors say, "well, we were really tired and there were a lot of documents, so...yeah." true story. talk about shaking your faith in the system.
I've been following this case closely, and most "pundits" are saying that Lay will get convicted on >4 charges, and Skilling will get convicted on >16 charges.
This is the same thing I have heard. I also heard that if the verdict came in before Memorial Day weekend, it would indicate a guilty verdict rather than a not guilty one.
Which is why the closing and opening is much more important than reams of documents, which are there for the purposes of establishing a record as much as trying to persuade.
I only hope Channel 11 cuts in to the verdict, since that's the station that all the women in the breakroom are watching their soap operas on....
