Lawn Mower: Electric or Gas?

I got a real POS electric mower that’s like 12 inches wide on over a quarter acre lot with significant elevations swings. Oh and a fisher price electric weed eater to go with it.

I went electric 5 years ago. Best decision ever. Dont have to worry about gas, carburetor, spark plugs, and starts up immediately. And about a quarter as loud.

 

How do current electric mowers hold up on thick Houston lawns that go weeks without a cut?

Also, if you’re going electric, why not a robot?

 

A few years back, bought and electric weedwacker. It would go for about 30 minutes in a charge. I needed way more than that. So I used it the whole day and then took it back to home Depot and returned it even though it had grass stains all over it. Dude asked me what was wrong with it and I told him I didn't like it. I will eventually go electric, but I need more performance out of it.

 

I have a 60v toro lawnmower, blower, and weed whacker. They are great overall.

The only drawback is max power. The electric mower just doesnt have max power of a gas mower if I've let the grass get overgrown.

But the benefits far out weigh the drawbacks. It's noticeable lighter, easier to store (can stand vertically), no regular maintainence, no gasoline smell, and quieter. It's nice to not have to worry about old gas and draining the carburetor.

I haven't had to replace the battery yet after 2.5 years. I have a small 1/4 yard so one charge can do the yard 1.5 to 2 times, depending on length of the grass.

I would not go back to gas.

I have a relatively small yard so only have a push mower with the only motor being my legs. In August though I was out of the country and then got COVID and didn’t mow the lawn for 3 weeks. The grass grew 8” and had to borrow a friend’s mower. The grass was so tough took two gas mowers to get it done after the first one kept on stalling out.

 

If you go weeks w/out a cut, dont bother with electric. Electric is excellent for weekly cuts on small lawns. My 3 week st Augustine took almost 27AH to cut, granted the DeWalt system is very underpowered.

5 years ago I went with DeWalt everything. Last year I started switching to EGO. If my Dewalt pushmower goes out again, I may consider a robomower. Currently they are too expensive and antiquated. I dont mind mowing, its the trimming and cleanup that I dont like. At the cost of a robomower and the need for trim and cut, I would assume to contract it out. Plus I dont want my robomower to roll off while Im at work or my begger neighbor asking to use it for free.

 

Just bought another gas 46" rider. Had the same model and it lasted 6.5 years cutting 1.5 acres. I think I can get it fixed but worst case I have spare parts for my new one. I figured I got my money's worth because I ran it pretty hard.

 

You can buy one with exchangeable battery packs and have 3 of them fully charged on deck. Once the first one dies put it on the charger by the time the 3rd one dies the first is ready to go again rinse wash repeat. Works for me

 

You got that sweet young and tender Minnesota grass though.

 

I use a gas reel mower.

 

The one I'd gotten had 2 battery packs. That wasn't enough for one to recharge while using the other, and buying more batteries is expensive. It was a bridge too far.

 

i had both a gas and battery push mower. they died at the same time. i bought a corded electric mower as a temp but found it more convenient as there is no recharging, buying gas, or cleaning/changing the sparkplugs. now it's my permanent solution.

I'm picking up my new zero turn mower today. I'm excited, toys are fun.

It has a battery, but it's not battery powered.

 

Only if I mow regularly.

 

I guess it depends on the size of your yard and how often you'll mow. I have less than a 1/4 acre yard and my 4ah greenworks mower can finish it on one go.
