The Rockets have made attempts to move up in the draft. Morrison, with a healthy Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, would help make the Rockets instant contenders. The problem is that since the McGrady trade the Rockets have had few assets to offer in a trade. Stromile Swift and Luther Head are possibilities, but neither player's trade value is that high at the moment. More likely, the Rockets to try to trade down or out of the draft in exchange for a veteran. The Rockets are in "win now" mode. With the exception of J. J. Redick, it's unclear anyone on the board can help them at No. 8. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2006/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&id=2495754
Sounds like JVG--WIN NOW FRAME OF MIND. I don't like it one little bit. The Rockets needs will take them at least two offseasons to get all the pieces together. We need to get young players that can develop with Yao Ming not be worried about JVG and his reputation!!!!! T Mac Yao and James shouldl be the VETS on the Team.
The Rockets might trade up, down or out of the draft, or stay at #8. Thanks for breaking the scoop, Chad!
Hilarious! The reality with Chad Ford and the Rockets is...he just has no contacts with them so he really has no grasp on what they want to do. He probably has some decent contacts with some other teams, but you dont hear much from Ford that is very definitive when it comes to the Rockets because he just doesnt have any sources that can point him in any real direction. Bucher has a much better grasp in regards to the Rockets than Ford does.
What are you talking about? The Rockets should get the best players possible and that will help us win now. It's been said many times before JVG doesn't have control over the draft so his reputation has zip to do with anything the Rockets decide. If (as you indicate) we should pick up Mike James, this is a CLEAR indication of "win now" which is what you are against. Lastly, JVG has said before we need to get younger. Do you think this is "win now"?
With the team we have, we should definitely be in a "win now" mindset. We can thrive if we build similarly to how the Heat built- two superstars and valuable VETERAN role players. I'm not sure if there is in fact a steady veteran available for our #8 pick but the fact is we need someone who can help us NOW, not 2-3 years down the road.
Am I only the only one who's sick and tired of all these old players? I don't want us to end up signing a Derek Anderson or David Wesley instead of getting a promising, young, athletic player. Miami's moves worked for one season. Good for them. But it's hard to see them getting any better in the coming years outside of Dwyane Wade. We need to put ourselves in a position to be able to improve for a 3 or 4 year stretch.
i don't get this "win now" cliche that's been building momentum the past few years. If there is a professional sports team out there that does not have a "win now" mentality, I truly feel sorry for their fanbase. Who wants to root for a "the past is gone. the present isn't looking any brighter. but the future...that's where we'll succeed!" team?
I wish ESPN would stop slobering all over the Rockets / J.J. Reddick combo. He will not immediately help any more than any other player. For that matter, I've got $20 bucks to the tip jar if they take Reddick - I just can't see it happening. Conversely, Adam Morrison on this team would be awesome. It'd be great if we were able to move up.
JJ was a stud on the court. O-n t-h-e c-o-u-r-t. He is due his due, and I do. But do I want him @#8? I really do not know.
The trailblazers(right now) and the bulls(when they traded Brand) and any other rebuilding team right now. LOL. I do feel sorry for them. haha
See this is what bugs me the most...he is a great pickup at number 8...top 5, no...but you rarely get a great player at 8 or lower....rarely....unless you are drafting for 3 years down the road. JJ Redick is the player that would fit the Rockets the best, out of the one's available. He would be a STEAL at 8. DD
Yes!! Iam all for winning as soon as possible but I am not for the Wesley. Moochie, Howard and Bowens level players. So if you are going to get decent veterans of a reasonable age and have nobody to trade for them and little cap room to sign them. The management may not be able to win now but have to be patient and get the team together as soon as they possibly can.The first two steps are getting JAMES and two good draft picks, then Morey CD and JVG can try and work some majic!! I am not against winning, I just want us to be sure of putting a championship team together of our two stars and a great supporting cast, no more scrubs, no more Swift mistakes .
not really DD....we need quality starters not bench players. I know he can shoot , but will give up those same exact point on the defensive end plus get Yao in foul trouble. YAO needs to come out the gate avg. 25pt 12 reb ....no excuses
How is he a STEAL at 8 if he's not a great pickup in the top 5. Steal is for guys who are drafted lower than he should go. So are you saying that he should go at 6 or 7 and we get a bargain for having him slip a place or two.
To me, a GM is doing a poor job if they are not getting a consistent, every game every year starter at any pick below, say 10-14. I'm not saying that this happens, or even happens a majority of the time, just that as an organization and as a fan, you should definitely expect it. I don't think JJ fits that bill, though I could be wrong. Also, I don't doubt the Rockets may be the best place for JJ, but is he the best choice for the Rockets. His skills only address one of our needs, perimeter shooting. IMO, this isn't even the most pressing need, although it is certainly a glaring one. I think we need size and athleticism in the backcourt (the true backcourt = PG, SG...T-Mac possesses those at SF already) even more. Third to that is maybe shooting, but maybe perimeter defense just as much.
