Not sure how accurate that rumor is as far as Wii is concerned: http://www.gamestop.com/gs/wii/wii_signup.asp
"After Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson wrote in a report that PlayStation 3 units on display at the Tokyo Game Show about 10 days ago operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset.." RCola post in 3, 2, 1...
As mentioned, at TGS, several PS3s had some issues. Simply having to reset them wouldn't necessarily mean the hardware was at fault (the games are still buggy, and need to be reset in some cases), but they were overheating from what I understand. Sony responded by saying that the conditions at TGS were much worse than what you'd find in a normal home (very hot, crowded, PS3s in close confined boxes, etc). If it means anything, there weren't any malfunctioning PS3s the week prior to that during a Sega event (where the PS3s were allowed to "breathe" a little more), and there have also been some impressions like these since then: http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=7511314&publicUserId=5380090 Guess we'll have to find out later if it was just the conditions at TGS, or if the PS3 will be causing fires in people's homes. As for preorders, I've kind of been confused by the whole thing. I read that they weren't going to take them, I've read that they were still waiting on shipment numbers to decide what to do, and I've read that they'll leave the issue up to the individual managers at each store. I've been a little busy lately so I might have missed any official confirmation, but I'm waiting a little longer to see what they want to do. As for the interface, you can see it in action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V1EgunRh3M There was a much better demo at TGS (with a few more features), but I can't find the link to it. I might post it later if I can find it. Looked good to me, but I'm used to it thanks to the PSP. edit: I think this is it: http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?type=wmv&id=13649
Supposedly, each Gamestop expects to get 6 PS3's at launch. They've been told that the managers can take 1 for themselves (up to 2 managers) and that the rest (read: four) are supposed to be offered to "loyal customers" first. In otherwords, if you plan on getting a PS3, don't go to Gamestop. I forget which gaming blog I read this at (come to think of it, it's possible I read it on Digg).
I was at gamestop this past weekend and started chatting with the store manager and he told me it'd be more like 3 or 4 total systems they'd get and that they are not doing preorders just a first come first serve basis
Wow. So about 5 PS3's per Gamestop ... let's just guess that there are 20 Gamestop's in the Houston area, so about 100 PS3's total. I won't be buying anything at launch but the hunt for these things is going to be insane...much worse than the 360 it looks like.
Yeah, it will probably be worse than the 360. The shipment numbers are about the same (assuming Sony can actually meet them), but I'm guessing demand for the PS3 will be at least a little higher than it was for the 360, making it more difficult to find. Things will be crazy, that's for sure.
I wonder how they breakdown of basic/premium systems will be. If a store gets 3 of each and 2 managers take premium systems that could leave the store with 1 premium to sell.
Not sure about PS3 (I'm not planning on getting one at launce) but I can say that the Gamestops in Beaumont will be pre-ordering Wii. They do not have a solid date(but I have heard it could be as early as next week) but they are going to have a display model in at some point this month. I was told when the display was in store they would start taking orders. I guess I will check it out when I pick up MK:A on Tuesday. I am friendly with one of the managers (he wasn't working when I called) and if I see him next week, I'll try to see if I can pin him down on a date. edit: If the numbers above are true (and I have no reason to doubt them) then launch day will be wild. Glad I decided to wait.
I was watching RC youtube link and found this.. It's from a NinFan, but that first half is funny stuff.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EpXCTwFrLU&mode=related&search=
I don't think anyone is going to find a PS3 for 499 or 599. They're going to be available in $1600 bundles or on eBay for insane amts....
Prior to the inclusion of HDMI in every SKU, I thought I read something about a 80/20 breakdown in favor of the $600 SKU. I think it was Kaz Hirai who said they might adjust that ratio, but I'd be surprised if there weren't FAR more $600 PS3s than $500 PS3s, at least at launch. They'll end up costing Sony a lot less than the other SKU, so they'll probably try to keep losses to a minimum. Most people might prefer the $500 SKU anyway, so even if most of the premiums were already taken, I don't think people would be disappointed with getting the $500 PS3 (especially now that it has HDMI). eBay prices probably will be pretty crazy, especially if people from Europe and Australia (or even Japan, since they'll only have 100K at launch) start bidding. There are a lot of people in the world that were planning on having a PS3 this year...price may not be a factor for them.
any recommendations on how to get a ps3? when is the release date? i heard day after thanksgiving? electronic stores going to carry them? best buy, circuit city?
