LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The last Oldsmobile is scheduled to roll off a Lansing assembly line this week, ending production of an automobile line that began in the city in 1897.

Thursday's end has been anticipated since December 2000, when General Motors (GM) announced it would discontinue the brand.

"Generations of people in Lansing have been touched by Oldsmobile, either by making them in the plant or driving them down the road," General Motors spokeswoman Kim Carpenter told the Lansing State Journal. "We want to give Oldsmobile the send-off it deserves."

The last Oldsmobile will be an Alero, the only model still in production. General Motors has slowly phased out other Olds models the past few years.

The final Alero will go to Lansing's R.E. Olds Transportation Museum.

GM will mark the occasion with several events this week. On Wednesday, the automaker will unveil a commemorative Alero. The Final 500 Special Edition Aleros will bear special logos and certificates of authenticity.

"I can understand GM's business decision, but seeing Oldsmobile go is almost like a death of someone in the family," said Ken Nicholas, a long-time Olds enthusiast from Eaton Rapids.

They tried desperately with their new models (Intrigue, Alero, Aurora), but they were the same old GM. Pathetic quality interiors, total lack of egronomic attention to detail and butt-ugly styling (as exemplified by the newest Chevy's, the Malibu and that stupid demi-truck/convertible thingy that will sell as well as winter coats in Key West). GM is going down and they have their labryinthine bureaucracy to thank for that.

I had an Oldsmobile at one point, too. A Cutlass of some sort. From the 1980s, but I don't remember which year specifically.

When they revamped their line up to add the Alero and Aurora and whatnot, I thought they were going to make a turn-around. The car magazines loved those cars, but they just didn't catch on with the customers.

I guess those who were buying Oldsmobiles didn't like the new stuff (they were, by and large, older folks) and the Boomers they were going after were buying German and Japanese stuff and weren't persuaded by the attempts.

It's sad to see the brand go. For a time, they made some very good cars. But the management over at the General has been doing everything they can for quite some time to run all their brands into the ground.

This is merely the first one down. I assume Buick is not long for this world, either.

Isn't Damiler Chrysler dumping Plymouth, too? Or have they already? (Not like Plymouth was doing anything but selling models that were just rebadged versions of another brand).

My very first car was a 1984 Delta 88 Royale Brougham.

I have very fond memories of that car. It was seldom in the shop and didn't die on me until 1994.

I remember the brothers of one of my friends bought a Olds Aurora. We thought that was a wicked ride. I could've sworn that the car had some big initial popularity and then Olds jacked up the price on it when they saw people really wanted it for the price it came out at. I could be wrong about that, but that's what I recall.

    It's inside the lines . . .

But also, this is two years ago during the summer -- no one is ever here during the summer, so I could park across four spaces and it wouldn't be a thing :)

Did you get the yellow because you saw Evil Dead too many times (though I guess "The Classic" is a Delta 88 rather than a Cutlass)?

My first car was a 1983 Olds Cutlass Supreme. That car had the most comfortable seats in the history of the automotive world--I still haven't sat in anything better.

:) Actually, the car was my grandfather's. He bought a Ford Focus and I nabbed this for 500. At the moment, it's not running, but I'm gonna work on it a lot this summer to get it back up and kicking ass. I got SO MUCH attention in that car :) It needs to get running again, then Air Conditioned, take care of a bit of rust on it, and it'll be my pimp ride again!

BTW, on comfort -- SMOOTHEST RIDE EVER!!! Damn, I miss driving it . . .

Well let me introduce my new Rocket Eighty-Eight..."

Isn't Oldsmobile the same thing as Buick and Cadillac??

I really never understood why GM had to have so many divisions.

The only divisions that GM should have are Chevrolet (duh), Cadillac, and Pontiac.
