Last Night's Game 3-18: Reason I would not draft J.J. Reddick!

I watched the Duke at LSU game last night and it confirmed what I already believed about J.J. Reddick. If I were the Rockets, I would not draft him. He is not going to be a star player in the NBA but at best a Steve Kerr/Jim Paxson/John Barry clone. If he was closer to a Jeff Hornacek or Mike Miller, it would be different. He cannot get his own shots off without major screens being set. He is also not very quick. The ROX already are a slow team and need more quickness and athleticism in order to compete with the Dallas' and Suns of the NBA. Reddick was covered rather easily all night and they blocked or made him change many of his shots. He is on the small side at 6'4 and the Rox are already sized challenged at the SG and SF positions outside of TMAC! What do you guys think?

I've always been against taking both Morrison and Reddick, they are not going to get their shots off as easily. Neither could advance his team either last night.

Sorry but we need to take his teammate Sheldon Williams or even Josh McRoberts.

I think you could take any player in college, and if you looked at the worst game they played, you could say the same thing.

The thing about the Rockets is that we don't need another guy who'll go make his own shot and do his own thing. It would be nice, but the biggest thing we need is someone who can just find holes out on the perimeter and take passes from Yao and McGrady when they are double-teamed. The concept of our offense is similar to the Hakeem setup. Force a double team and kick out to an open shooter. It doesn't work because we don't have good shooters, so getting a pure shooter would be a huge boost.

Remember how well the team did last year when Barry and/or Wesley were out there shooting well? They bring very little else to the table, but at the end of the season, this team was destroying good teams very consistently that way. I totally disagree with the idea that we need more athleticism to match up to Dallas. We took them to 7 games, including 2 that we choked away leads late and should have won - all without a power forward. Put Juwon Howard on that team last year and we win that series most likely. Everyone forgets the first 6 games and only looks at game 7 when thinking of that series. If we're going to beat Dallas, it will be by plaing our way, not by trying to play theirs.

Actually, I wanted to see Redick struggle because his stock might fall. Then maybe we can buy a low 1st round pick (in the late teens or 20's) and JJ might fall to us there.

He couldn't handle an all out defensive attack, which is what LSU was doing, I mean when he was running off screens he would get the ball and see Tyrus Thomas or Glen Davis in front of him if his man was screened off. In the NBA he's going to be an excellent complementary player, and there will never be a team who will focus on stopping him in the NBA like LSU did, so I think he'll be alright, this game shouldn't hurt him so much.

Give a ton of credit to LSU for the D they played on Reddick, he was their main focus lastnight and they didn't disappoint. With that said, I was never high on Reddick but I would certainly welcome his shooting to the team.

We lost 4 of our 7 in that series. Why ignore the first two games? Why not say we won 2 out of 2 in that series? And in two of those losses, we had 6 (?) point leads with 3 minutes to go before choking them away. It's not like we got dominated and have to rebuild our team to compete with them.

kerry, you are the prototype of a terrible poster. Stop starting knee-jerk reaction threads on whatever comes to mind. You can't judge whether or not to draft a player by ONE game...that gets you into trouble (just look at that contract we gave Cato).

IMO, Reddick is not worth a lottery pick at this point. I think he'll probably land in the 15-25 range in the draft, so the Rockets would either have to trade down or package that 2nd rounder for him.

LSU guarded Redick as the 1st option on the team, double teaming him, putting their best defender on him, having a big man there ready to block his shot on drives. I'm disappointed that Redick didn't seem to have an answer for all that, like a floater. But much more disappointed that the highest paid coach and the rest of Duke's all american squad had a collective brain cramp and made no adjustments!

If Redick is on this team, he's not going to see defense like that, that stuff is reserved for Tmac.

Exactly. Some people think Reddick can be great in this league, but the Rockets only need him to be good. It kills me how many times Yao or Tracy pass to the open man on the perimeter only to see a wide open three missed. All we need Reddick to do is to be able to drain those threes. Sure he shot 3-18, but thats with him being the number one guy with a defense tailor made for him. In our case, defenses will have to do deal with McGrady and Yao first. According to scouts, Reddick´s jump shot has perfect mechanics, the only thing bringing him down is his shot selection. With Yao and McGrady giving him open looks all day long, he could have obscene shooting numbers.

We need players who can hit the open shots, we don't need anymore guys who create their own shots, we have enough of that. JJ would be a great fit for the Rockets. IMO he is exactly what we need.

Trajan Langdon had great shot mechanics too.

Redick is undersized, unathletic, can't defend, doesn't rebound, and isn't a great ballhandler. He's a bench player on the NBA level.

i think the only thing redick's 3-18 performance last night proved was that he isn't going to be a guy who can create his own offense in the nba. people who really think he is going to be a star and make all-star teams are obviously fooling themselves.

jj is going to be a nice complimentary shooter at the next level. he's going to need another dominant player who can create offense and take on double teams to make him effective. i don't see him being more than a jon barry type of spot up shooter. now, do you really want to spend a lottery pick on a complimentary spot up shooter?

with the heavy emphasis and importance on athletic, versatile and skilled guards in the nba, that is where we need to look. the great teams right now all possess those type of guards who can play defense, hit jumpers, and create shots in the lane.

brandon roy and rodney carney fit the bill for what we need on the perimeter.

JJ's role on the Rockets team is to nail wide open 3s from shots created for him by Yao and TMac. We don't need a guy who creates shots for himself. We need a deadly outside shooter who can rain wide open 3s when given the opportunity.

JJ is a great fit for this Rockets team with Yao and TMac at the helm. Period.

possibly true, fringe starter on a team (like our's) with some superstars to draw attention away. shoot, freakin kyle korver is starting on a team, and that guy is horrid aside from his shooting.

reddick isn't SO bad on defense. he's not a bad ballhandler at the 2. and he's 6-4...that's not really undersized. it's probably about average amongst all the 2's in the nba i'd think. for every 6-6 JRich, you have a 6-1 Wesley or Ben Gordon, etc.

Langdon was actually a pretty good shooter as a pro. Just bad at everything else. For two of his three seasons, he was over 40% from the three point line.

Here's a novel thought. He could have a career that resembles the career of somebody that isn't white.

its not about color...but about his skills. so the statement is true. he is just a shooter. however, the interesting part is will he be able to consistantly knock down threes? who knows???

ONE THING I KNOW FOR SURE IS THE ROX BETTER NOT USE A LOTTERY PICK ON HIM
