My manager called yesterday and told me that LCS is auditioning in Dallas on Monday the 19th. I don't know about going because although I'm not a household name I do headline nationally and have never had a hard time getting work. I actually liked the show but I wonder if I would look like an amateur if I did it. I've turned down shows like "Starsearch" and "Coming to the stage" because I think it would hurt more than help, but I'm torn with this LCS thing because Ralphie May is a good friend of mine and is demanding 10 grand a week now. Did you watch the show, and how do you rate it's quality?
I watched every episode of that show and can honestly say that I still don't know most of their names...but...when they show up on Comedy Central, the light bulb will immediately go off and I'll know that I saw those guys on LCS and know that they're going to be pretty funny. The consistent visual exposure for the 6+ weeks that the show runs would definitely help you in the long run. I say you should go for it!!! You've got the cf.net army behind you. If you make it, just be careful of what you say in the house...the editors seem to only pick the most controversial statements to replay on the weekly show. "You can do it!!! "
Does it pay you 10K/wk? Yes, because most ppl wouldn't bother to do research on you. I'd bet some of the comics on LCS weren't amateurs. It all boils down to your ego. Can your ego take a chill pill for 10K/wk? Besides, if your audience thinks you are funny, who cares if they know you've done major shows. As far as other jobs goes, it's up to your agent to sell you anyway. I'm sure he lets everyone in a hiring position know of your vast experience. Lastly, when they do the E! Hollywood story on you, everyone will find out that you've done major shows previously anyway! I thought the show was good. I didn't appreciate how everyone picked on the Asian guy, but good nonetheless. If your ego/pride means more to you than potentially making 10K/wk, then I wouldn't do it. However, you could be missing out on an chance of a lifetime. You seem like a smart dude, let us know what you decide. You've got some strong support from cf.net. Good luck!
Why not? I can't think of anything bad coming from it. The exposure would be a good thing I would think.
Go for it! Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Ruben Studdard may have the stigma of American Idol on them, but they've done ridiculously well for themselves (Justin "sucks to be you" Guarini being the exception). Richard Hatch will always be known as that "gay Survivor dude," but he won a cool million for his troubles. We ALL hate Trista and Ryan, but they made serious cash off ABC. Sure, you could end up losing and looking the fool, but there's no such thing as bad publicity, right? (Now, if we could only figure out how to get Trader_Jorge on the show, too. That would be pure comedy gold.)
Go for it!!! National TV exposure for as long as you stay on and all your buds on the BBS will be watching and voting!!
I say go for it. You may have a stigma from being on the show, but if you're truly funny it won't matter. I'm guessing Ralphie is getting paid because he is funny, not just because he was on the show. Seems like if the show is used as a crutch, you won't do well. But if the show is just used as one more open door, it could be the best thing you've ever done. If you turn it down, you could really regret it. I say do it.
Oh man AB....you gotta go for it! Besides the obvious maxim that says there is no such thing as bad publicity...what could it hurt? You have most of us behind ya...and at least those of us who havent had a chance to see you live can see some of your stuff.. I didnt watch the show last time around, but if you were on it...I would make an effort to watch. Good luck...Im pulling for ya.
Bugger all. At the very least, you get to be on Colin's show, which is rapidly exceeding Maher's Comedy Central gig in terms of relevance. Do yr airline peanuts bit.
Dang you guys are convincing, but here is another side of it. Two friends of mine, Jeff Berghart and Jeff Brown did these shows and didn't do well in front of the national audience, now they can't get work. Even though I don't do 10 grand a week I don't do bad relatively. Going on that show and not doing well if chosen, I could lose buyers that *PAY* me now. I'm not scared, because most of the guys from last season can't hold my jock and THEY know it. I'll keep you posted, meanwhile I'm in Miami this weekend having lunch with Cuttino Mobley's agent Saturday watching the Rocket's game (he's a friend of one of my best friends). thanks for the advice, you guys rock... ...but you already knew that.
I didn't see any of the last LCS, but they must of really **** the bed if they can't get gigs now. I have always thought that the only bad exposure was no exposure.
Q1. AB, are you ever planning on coming down to the valley? Q2. I need a time and channel for LCS please.
Interesting dilema AB. You had me laughing the whole damn time, so I dont see how people wouldnt like your gig. On the other hand, I can see the potential pitfalls if something goes wrong. If you think you have enough bad ass material to make 'em cry I would let it rip. I mean you only live twice right? Wait.... damnit thats a James Bond movie....
