I'm thinking about doing Lasik Surgery pretty sooon (maybe next week or so) and was wondering if any of you guys had it done recently? I was told there's different level of machines? Depending on how new it is. Well my current eye sight is 6.5 (pretty bad) and I'm looking for someone around $2000 for both eyes? Any suggestions? Thanks
You will find that 2000.00 isnt going to get you Lasik.. Those prices are mostly to get you in the door and when it's all said and done it will be close to double that.. Also if you have thin corneas get ready for a major price jump and more pain durring and after the procedure..
I've heard so many lasik horror stories.. I would wait until the procedure comes down in price and goes up in effectiveness.
Lasik prices have actually been rising over the years, due to practioners having to buy more expensive equipment.
I've heard that this guy is pretty good. At least I've known other, non-eye doctors, to recommend him.
I go to Berkeley Eye Center (used to be Mann-Berkeley) near Central Market. They are great eye doctors, but they charge $2K per eye for Lasik.
My dad had to wear contacts AND thick glasses every day for years. Now he wears neither. He did have some complications (“Diffuse lamellar keratitis, also known as “Sands of the Sahara,” happens to 1 out of 1000-2000 http://www.escrs.org/eurotimes/January2002/soothing.asp) and had to go back a few times. But all is well now.
it is funny you bring this up. i was just looking at this site http://www.lasikathome.com/index.html don't take it seriously though. its ridiculous. just look at the 4 easy steps
I just had it done about 1.5 months ago. I am so loving it. Best money spent in a long time. I went to the Mann Eye Insitute. They were partnered with Berkley for a long time if you remember those commercials on 610 (or was it 740AM). They are $2000 per eye but my cousin was interning there and got a 10% discount for me. Best $3600 spent. Places like this cost more because they upgrade their laser all the time. For example, the one they used on me they had just upgraded like 3 months ago. The first phase of the surgery, where the cut the flap, takes only 18 seconds on this machine versus 60 seconds on the older one. Just an example. My eyes were 4.5 and 4.25, btw. Also, I heard they can do up to 9 or 10. And if your corneas are thin they will do a procedure called Epi-Lasik. My other cousin had that done but it's more involved.
I had my Lasik done 2 years ago when i was in Iran. My doctor was from Chicago and had done the surgery for my Aunt and he is highly recommended over there. It was a big deal overseas. So many people from Arab countries were coming there to do the surgery. I paid about $500 bucks total with all my visits, medication and the surgery. The best money i ever spent. Of course becuase of the exchange rate $500 bucks was nothing for me, but for someone that lives there it's the equivelent to about a months wages or something to get the surgery. Even if i had to pay full price now i would definetly would do it.
I did mine at Mann-Berkeley Eye Center about a year ago and it is probably one of the amazing things I have ever seen. Lucky- my vision was 11.5 and I had perfect 20/20 after lasik, my vision has regressed a little bit but they do redos for free (up to 2 years). Mine costed about $2000 per eye though. Happy to give more details if wanted.
I don't know anything about Mann, but Berkeley, if he's still practicing, was a pioneer in cornea replacement. He went to England to study the cutting edge technology when this was in it's infancy. Ralph Berkeley was our family "eye doctor," for decades, because of his relationship with my father. Because Dad developed cataracts from an experimental medication, he went to the best in the city, Dr. Berkeley, to have the surgery. This was when the replacement corneas were sewn on the eye with tiny, tiny stitches by hand, using a microscope. You can imagine the skill this required. Mann went into business with Berkeley because of Berkeley's reputation. Whether Dr. Berkeley is anything more today than an investor in the chain of clinics is not something I know. Most likely he's retired. I wish I could have the procedure done, but my eyes are too bad.
I just don't think my night vision is near as good as before I had the surgery. I had it several years ago, several lasers ago at International Eye Care. I've often read that this happens (happened) a lot with people with large pupils. Also, here's something they don't tell you. About a year ago I developed a cataract in my right eye. Obviously that has nothing to do with the surgery, most likely from age and sun damage over the years. Virtually everyone will develop cataracts sooner or later. Well, because of my lasik surgery it is a lot harder for a cataract doctor to calculate the lens specifications correctly. Now my vision is off in that eye...especially my near vision. I have since gotten glasses to correct that but rarely wear them. Also, my reading vision is starting to go as well. What I'm saying is the older you get you might develop other things that will throw off the work of your lasik surgery forcing you to get glasses again. I depends on how you look at things. I am happy for the several years of good, not great, vision I had from lasik. But as I said, if I had to do it all over again I probably wouldn't. But that's just me.
