Larry Smith should let Francis do the play-calling

Sorry I just don't trust Mr. Mean very much. His offensive game plan didn't look good for me at all.

I read that the GSW coach let Arenas do the play-calling except the plays after timeout and Arenas feels very free and run a great exciting offense for them. And of course Sloan and Scott always let Stockton and Kidd call the majority of plays.

I believe Francis now has the capability, maturity and experience to do the same and run the team now. Actually I think Francis may even be more familiar with this side of the team than Mr. Mean.

    What do you think?

Nice idea; espcially b/c Stevie is developing more and more as an ignitor of the offense. But, I wouldn't let Francis run most of the plays on his own....probably some of them -- like a few series in a row and if it's working keep working it until it doesn't. I think the coaches should have control of what is called majority of the time, though.

But all in all, a nice idea like I said.

BTW -- the Lakers even sometimes dump the ball into Shaq and stand around while he does his thing, but this is b/c one) Shaq is just so dominant it's almost a given he'll score and two) well, what "one)" said. *lol* Still they move off the ball more and it opens up so many other ops. for their team.

I'm not sure that would be the best solution because that would give Steve too much influence over the team.
Basicly he would have the same control as a coach has and I think that's too much for a player in the game to have.

    The play list:

    1) PnR just inside the arc with continued dribbling into the paint (24 High?).

    2) Double high post (usually Yao and EG), dribble PnR with Forward, Yao backs into paint for entry pass.

    3) Guard ISO dribble penetration with kickout for a Griffin or Rice 3 late in the clock.

    4) Entry pass to Yao in the low block, passer cuts thru the paint. Yao goes 1on1 while 4 players plant themselves at the arc. Occassionally, someone on weakside will "dive" toward the basket for a pass or rebound.

    5) #4 with Taylor in the low block.

I'm not sure if Steve calling the plays will work or not, but he won't have any problem remembering the half court sets...most of us know them.

I could only imagine Stevie calling the plays:

    1. I'll go one on one, everyone else get out of the way.
    2. I'll pass it to Mobley and let Mobley jack it up
    3. Let me dribble this one off my shin :)

Gater, LOL. Our offensive sets are rather boring eh? ;) That's why I think Francis will have no problem calling them. He might even be more familiar with the pattern of plays than Coach Smith.

    Stevie reallly doesn't do #1 anymore...he still does #2 and #3.

I don't know what the difference will be....if Francis calls the plays or Larry Smith calls them. They are still the same plays.

But we really have to change the one play where we just dump it to Yao and everyone just runs away........and stands and watches...:(

We followed Rudy T ball perfectly. Pass for the first 10 minutes like the Celtics and then play one on one the rest of the way. Mr. Mean kept to the game plan.

I think our team looks much more disciplined under Larry Smith. I like how we are actually running plays (for the most part) instead of just dribbling around in some stupid iso. The times I've seen Steve call the plays, he slows down the offense too much, and there are like only 15 seconds left by the time the play starts.

The one thing you DON'T want to do is let Steve Francis have full control of the team. He is at present in a transition mode, moving from being a most selfish guard, bent on his own statistics, one with a belief that he could be this years MVP. He is becoming the Guard that the Rockets need him to be, quite different from his early season bent.He still needs the help of the team coach and is not yet ready for the heavy leadership role which the first poster is suggesting! Don't overload him at this time.

Come on, if Steve did all the play calling, kidrock8 would have a heart attack!

Hmmm....now that I think about it, excellent point! :D

Sorry I didn't see how our team under Larry Smith is more disciplined than under Rudy. Smith just restricted the team to those dumb 1-on-1. Not creativity at all.
